Wheel Hop!

With the break in period over on my new 6MT, I of course had to rev her up, drop the clutch, and leave a tattoo on the street. However, I was very disappointed to feel a lot of wheel hop going on. Anybody else experience this? How can this be remedied?

First time I did it on wet it felt like some wheel hop, but second time nothing - just stayed flat, thou I didn't really kick it very hard either time:

Is your VDC off ? Maybe VDC interference feels like wheel hop (kinda weird I know !) - but can't think of anything else !!

Yes, it was off. I'll have to try it again.

I know this is about the 6MT but this spinning almost led to a crash for me. I own a 5AT and was at a light, had the VDC off, put it in DS -> 1st... did a power brake and the car started spinning for 1 sec and all of a suddent it STOPPED, it was like I was not on the gas at all... RPMs dropped and stayed at 1000, the guy behind me (who though I'm going for it) almost ran into me. Seems like autos can't do it quiet like you 6MT guys.

What rpm were you at when u were power-braking ??

I've seen in some thread that the ECU cuts rpm if u exceed some limit (sorry - can't remember details) ... I *think* <3k should be fine ... but I can't test my theory !

Mine does it horribly! At the track last week at one point the car shook so much that it actual threw change out of the ashtray onto the console. It isn't ALL the time but it is certainly not uncommon. Don't know how to fix it but I am damn sure trying to figure it out.

i had the same problem with wheel hop but i have a 5at. if you power brake only to 28-3000rpm then you wont experience it so much. you might also want to try and lower your tire pressure because the dealer has it alittle overinflated (at least in mine).

yes wheel hop happens on my 6mt too, very badly too. I found a way to spin the tires and make them not hop. Unfortunatly this method is not for racing and only if you want to do a nice burnout. Instead of dropping the clutch at around 3k rpms....I drop it at around 4-4500 and the tires just spin nicely and the car goes. If i drop it at around 3-3500 rpms they hop so bad it feels like my rear bumper is going to rattle off.

Dang that independent rear suspension. Why couldn't Infiniti have used a good hop-resistant live axle!?.

OK, I'll drop the sarcasm just to state that my G35 doesn't hop any worse than the BMWs I've owned. My 72 Datsun 240Z had really bad wheel hop with its open differential and independent rear suspension.

I agree... the IRS setup is not for clutch dumping..
I owned a couple of Camaro's over the years... the old solid axle setup is a lot of fun.. often criticized for being primitive.. it sure has some advantages

Best to avoid the axle tramping... very abusive on the suspension and driveline components.. The G is better suited for road courses than the drag strip.

Oh I am well aware. The problem is that it was almost impossible to stop the wheel hop once it started. I am still learning this car but it is a whole different animal all around than my '04. I have to disagree with you on the G being more for the road course than the drag strip though - I think it is like most cars where it is equally good on either with the proper set up.
