Climate Control

I was reading the owners manual trying to figure out the climate control in my 6mt. The manual makes it seem that if one hits auto and then sets the temp the climate control will maintain cabin temp. However I found that if I do that and NOT hit the AC button, then all I am feeling is outside air. What is the opinion of the members of this forum? Is the AC button used unless it is heat only? Thanks.

When I hit auto it turns the AC on and adjusts the mode per the temp in the car. If I want it warmer than outside it sendd the warm air out of the foot vents, if I want it cool it will come out the mid vents. Sometimes depending on the temp difference between inside the cabin, outside, and what I have it set at might go to both mid and bottom vents
