High pitched noise

While listening to the radio today (XM), i noticed a high pitched noise in the car with the windows closed. I turned off the radio, screen, AC, nothing would stop it. I turned off the car, it stopped. Turned it back on, started again. Got in my car 5 hours later, still the same noise. Sounds like a TV if you turn the volume to 0. Thoughts?

Assuming you weren't moving then the noise has to be coming from the engine compartment (maybe clutch if 6-speed).

I would start the car and open the hood and take a listen.

We have this noise in our BMW X5. It seems to be coming from the NAV. system area . Never bothered to get it checked. Thankfully that noise doesn't happen in the G (knock on wood lol).

You know the high pitch noise could come from the disk drive in the console....

This is not normal. Bring it in to get it checked out.

Follow up

It thankfully has gone away, but I'm sure it'll be back. I have no nav/hard drive to speak of, but my first guess would be its coming from the speakers. I'll take the suggestion though and pop the hood next time. When I bring it in for oil change I will have them note it as well.

High Pitched Noise!!

I have an '05 AT Coupe and over the past couple months have experienced a high pitched noise coming from behind the glove compartment but not from the engine. It almost sounds like a high pitched electrical feedback or an alert of some sort. Anyhow, I'm wondering if anybody can help me decipher what this noise is.

It only lasts for about 10 seconds...doesn't happen everyday (maybe once every 30 starts) and happens on the first drive of the day. I don't have the NAV system. It really hasn't been a problem in the past, it's only happened about 3 times, but yesterday was crazy. The noise wouldn't stop. I drove with this high pitched sound for about 10 mins!! I parked the car for about 8 hours and when I started the car...no problems. This morning...no problems. I'm sure the noise is coming back soon, but can somebody help me nip this in the bud?
