Frustration with XM Nav Traffic
Frustration with XM Nav Traffic
Hey everyone,
I'm a brand new owner of a 2007 G35x with Premium, Nav and Technology packages. I have owned them all, and this is the best car I have ever owned. I absolutely love it. We got Blue Slate with Stone interior.
The thing that I love about the car is it does just about everything right. It's fast, luxurious, beautiful.
What frustrates me, though, is the lockout when moving. I understand why it's there. It should be there for certain things. When you have XM Nav Traffic, though, you can't read the entire traffic message when you are moving. The end of the message tells you how fast traffic is moving or the duration of the incident.
Is there anyone we can write or email to request an update in the future?

Everyone recommends calling Inifiti customer care to log your complaint. It's the # 1 issue with the car that certain functionality is broken while driving. it's definitely a defect despite what others say, because if it was intended to be a lockout then they did a poor job because some screens are not locked out while driving that have the exact same functionality. i.e. you can scroll through your phonebook and make calls using the touch screen at 160MPH but you can not scroll down to the next gas station for the exit which you are approaching 1/2 mile away.
it's a flaw, not a feature (not directed at you MikeOC, this is preemptive for the posters that will tell you it is a good safety design)

I thought this was going to be annoying when I first got my G, because I'm used to Mercedes which does not lock out anything. However, now that I have my G, I don't see what the big deal is. Almost everything can be done by voice, and it works pretty flawlessly from my experience. Need the nearest gas station? Just speak the command, and it will get it to you. If you want a specific brand of a gas, the car will even recognize the comand "Nearby Chevron", "Nearby Texaco", etc., etc.
I still agree that Infiniti shouldn't be locking out the nav, but I don't see how it severely limits navi functions while driving.

Voice commands may fine when looking for a specific location, but the lockout of the scrolling feature when viewing the Traffic Information is really annoying.
I can't tell you how many times I wanted to scroll past the 5th item, but I couldn't because I was moving. This in my view diminishes the utility of the Nav Traffic, since the first 5 entries may not be relevant, or you may already know the problem because you are in the midst of it! Also, it sometimes lists traffic data in the first 5 positions that are for roads that are not part of my planned route.
For example, if I am on Interstate 680 (SF Bay Area), and I want to see the traffic data for Highway 24, more often than not it will list other roads first before displaying Highway 24 information. So, then I need to wait until I come to a complete stop (not the norm when you are on an interstate) or I have to be on the ramp for Hwy 24 before the list updates with the Hwy 24 information in the first 5 positions. However, I do find the colored road indicators very helpful, since I can tell by the map what the traffic situation is for my route. And you can use the Zoom In/Zoom Out feature, as required, to fully assess the situation. But with the map indicators, you cannot see the details unless you go to the traffic screen.
Another issue I have is that you cannot take advantage of the voice warnings of traffic delays ahead or automatic detours unless you have a route programmed into the Navi. This doesn't offer much of a help, especially since most of my driving is my daily commute.
Lastly, the only other complaint I have is the fact that when you do access an entry on the traffic list, you cannot tell the direction until you actually press enter to see the detail.
Bottom line - this is really great technology, but it desparately needs some practical improvements.
Just my 2-cents worth!
Regards,

The icons for construction/incident (!) and accident (I like the little upside down car
) have a little marker indicating what direction they're in. So if you're going towards the accident, the little icon with the car has an even smaller red arrow on top of it, indicating that it's moving with you, so it's on your side of the road.If it's on the opposite side then the arrow is on the bottom of the icon.
And yes, I still agree 100% that it sucks that you can't really access the traffic info. Even more so, you can't even ASK for the traffic info without taking your hands off the wheel and scrolling to info --> traffic info --> info on route. I have that pattern memorized by now.
