All-Season Tire size for 2007 G35S Sedan

I am planning to get some all-season tires.
My OEM tire sizes are 225/50/18 (Front) & 245/45/18 (Rear)
The front tire size appears to be very rare, with only Goodyear offering a set of tires of that size, which I'd rather not buy.
I am a newbie in this and would be very thankful for some advice on changing tire sizes. I

am not planning to buy new rims. My current rims are 7.5''(F) and 8.5''(R).
Can I have a 225/45/18 (F) with a 245/45/18(R)? Size the car will be slightly lower in the

front(hence the stagerring ratio would change slightly), will this affect the VDC in the

car?

Alternatively, will a 235/50/18(F) and 255/45/18(R) be a better option?

Any other size which you guys can think of?

I have a winter setup sitting, waiting for the winter to come.

It's an all around 17 x 7.5 with 225 width rubber. I don't foresee any problems other than a false tire pressure alarm.

if you go with the rear size in the front, it is less change. 225/45R18 is 3.28%diameter difference while 245/45R18 is only 0.64% difference. 245/45R18 fits 7.5 rim.

just curious, why not get the goodyear?

I'm moving from LA to Boston next month and will be there for 1 year. Is it dangerous to be driving around with my Sport tires during the winter??

Sorry, that's the biggest font we have here on G35driver:

YES!

*Attempting* to drive the car in snow with summer tires is asking to be hospitalized, or worse: dead. Do yourself a life-saving favor and get a dedicated winter set. Or alternately, get yourself a winter beater and keep the G in SoCal.

Wow, I was expecting a "nah you'll be alright" you just scared the S&*$ out of me now. So would another good option be to get some all season tires that can be used for both winter and summer, or do I REALLY need a dedicated set of winter tires?

kewltea, you'll find a wide range of opinions on your question. i live in DC area and there is very little snow that is unplowed. after going back and forth b/w all-season or winter tires, i'm going to go with 17s on winter tires. i think of it as insurance. i would rather pay 1G on tires, then get into an accident.

from what i can gather, since this is my first winter in the G, all season should suffice. your only choice in the stock size is the goodyear eagle f1 all season. otherwise, you can go with 17s on all season. but if you do that, might as well pay couple hundred more and get winter tires.

the summer tires lose traction starting at 40 degrees. even if there is no snow/ice/sleet, summer tires cant handle the cold.

I ran 255/40/18 tires (on 8.5" rims) all around on my 07 G35X and I had no VDC problems or any other ill effects except for my speedo being way off since my tires were quite a bit shorter than the stock tires.

I now run 245/45/18 all around and love them they are Pilot Sport All Season tires.

The reviews/tests I read, mentioned reasonable performance. I'd rather get nice perf tires as they will be my only tires. And no other all-season offers tires at 225/50/18.

As for running 245/45/18 all round, I was told that it makes sense to have the same size on the non-S as they do not have staggered tire sizes. BUt, the VDC would be set for the staggered sizes on the S(the others do not have staggered sizes). Hence, the question.

Yes, they will. Coupin827 has this setup ready for the winter. I guess you can PM him for more questions.

As for running A/S... here is my opinion: As someone who had a 6MT coupe with Michelin Sport summer tires and replaced them with A/S tires, I can say this:

In the snow, the A/S will be better than summer and MUCH worse than snow tires.

In the summer, the A/S will better than snow tires, but will be worse than summer tires.

You see, the summer tires are very good in summer temperatures, and snow tires are good in winter temps and snow. The A/S is neither - they are a major compromise in both scenarios. The way I see it, if you are already spending the money on A/S, might as well spend the money wisely and get a winter set. That way you will have a dedicated set for each season. More importantly, you will have a dedicated set that was designed to perform best during each time of the year. On top of that, while you are using one set, you are not using the other - major savings in thread life and thus - in $$$.

I know I tried A/S once thinking same as you: it will save me headaches of changing sets every season and provide me with a good solution for year round driving. It turned out to be a mistake. The traction in the snow was only marginally better over the summer tires, and the loss of agility in summer driving was just too unbearable - I was driving a GT coupe but had to watch my cornering because the sidewell of the A/S tires was softer than the Pilots'.

If you are asking me - go for a dedicated winter set - you'll get the best of both worlds and more importantly: you'll know you're safe in the winter and still be able to enjoy summer driving.

Good luck.

Any thoughts on running a 225/45/18 (F)with 245/45/18 (R) or 235/50/18(F) with 255/45/18(R). I will be replacing my summer tires with all season.

Like I've mentioned it above, I tried A/S tires on the stock 2003-2004 6MT/sport rims (7 spoke). I'm personally not fond of running 18s in the snow simply because of the smaller gap between the tires and the wheel well: it will trap snow and compound it much easier and faster than if you were to run on 17s.

My recommendation to anyone who is thinking of going with A/S tires on the stock wheels is to look for a pre-owned winter set in good condition. I got my set from Mr.Big here on the forum - at $500 shipped for 4 x 17" wheels and winter tires it was a steal. It was cheaper than what I paid for the A/S tires alone. He barely used them - there is plenty of thread life left on them.

Garnet Canuck also just found a set of 17" 350Z wheels with winter tires mounted on them for only $500 shipped.

My bottom line answer is: try to go for 17s.

I'm leaning this way too. My priorities when finding a apt in Boston are now: covered parking, and storage for my tires. The actual apt comes second haha

Very valid and important points to consider when looking for an apartment/house here in the NE region. Especially the covered garage. Trust me, the last thing you want is to get up extra early to stand outside in the freezing cold to scrape the ice and snow off your car, where instead, you can spend those 20 minutes in your warm bed.
