My recommendation to anyone who is thinking of going with A/S tires on the stock wheels is to look for a pre-owned winter set in good condition. I got my set from Mr.Big here on the forum - at $500 shipped for 4 x 17" wheels and winter tires it was a steal. It was cheaper than what I paid for the A/S tires alone. He barely used them - there is plenty of thread life left on them.
Garnet Canuck also just found a set of 17" 350Z wheels with winter tires mounted on them for only $500 shipped.
My bottom line answer is: try to go for 17s.

Even though I have the X and I have what I believe some of the best all season performance tires you can get, I still have Blizzak WS-50 snows mounted on 17s for the winter. I believe tires are the very most important thing you can get for your car. This is one area that you do not scrimp, get the best you can find

A few winters ago, I never took off my ultra high performance summer tires (on an FWD car). I never got into an accident (not even close), but it requires a lot of concentration and very conservative driving. I did get stuck and I did have a hard time on hills. All in all it wasn't worth it and I ended up getting winter tires for the next winter.
