Nav or No Nav?

Gents, preparing to purchase my third generation (and my third) G. Debating about whether I really need the Nav option or not. Thoughts? I could really use the money and am therefore leaning against it right now. Besides, the idea of the CD changer being in the trunk seems downright irritating. Also, I don't utilize a Nav system for my job. Thoughts?

There are obviously a lot of threads about this already but here goes. I never thuoght I would have used mine before so I was leaning against getting teh Nav in my G. I decided to get it and love it. I use it must more than I thought I would.

I use mine because I end up going to a lot of places around town and I may or may not have any idea where they are, especially in DC. But if I stilled lived where I grew up (Richmond, VA) I wouldn't of gotten one.

As for the CD changer in the trunk, I never use it. All of my songs are on my harddrive.

I forgot to mention. I never use the CD changer in the truck (or the CD player in the dash). I use my iPod for all my music.

Get the Nav. It's worth it IMO. A friend of mine recently bought a brand new Jeep without adding navigation thinking she'd go and have it installed somewhere. Yeah, okay. One place completely fvcked it up, another place more less said they don't want to do it, and I ended up fixing some of the mistakes place #1 made. Not worth all that trouble when you can have great factory integration.

Plus I have an 06 and wish it had touch screen nav the 07s have...

you dont need the nav, but it's def useful to have it. an aftermarket nav is much cheaper. if you need the money, and you're financing the car, that 2000 nav will be costing you more with the finance charges.

You should search for threads on this; this discussion is a borderline religious discussion, like 6MT vs. AT. My take is:
  • The hard drive is kinda cool, and it means you don't have to mess with an iPod. You do, however, have to synch multiple devices with new music.
  • Having NAV is useful, in that I use it about once a month. Having NAV locked into a single car, is much less useful. I spent $400 on a Garmin Nuvi, and can take it anywhere
  • Despite the fact that it would have basically been free for me (wife wanted to buy it for my bday), I passed. Not useful enough, didn't have enough value for the price. Others' situations and opinions are obviously different

Good luck with your decision!

I too use it more than I thought I would.

A short story: The wife and I just took a spur of the moment weekend trip to a favorite area of ours. It just so happened because of the color touring and a convention that was going on, everything seemed full. First 3 stops, no luck. Then I remembered something about the navigation having phone numbers. So we pulled over in a parking lot, did a search for hotels, picked a name, hit call and went down the list until we had a hotel 5 minutes later.

All without touching a phone (bluetooth) or getting out of the car...

The next day we did winery touring throughout the peninsula via the >Leisure ->Winery list in the Nav...

Navigation is great!

It's useful to have, but portable navigation devices such as the Garmin Streetpilot or Nuvi series tend to give much better directions. The G's Navigation system is actually one of the best if not the best, but my Garmin definately gives better overall directions. Going to our beach house I can save up to 45 minutes with the Garmin.

1/10 the cost and fully integrated.

Nav Traffic rocks (region specific). I've saved countless hours from sitting in traffic knowing what's up ahead. As for the navigation part, that rocks too. The 3 or so times that I've used it, has worked flawless. Plus the added Music Box hard drive thing is an added bonus.
