Gas Tank Fill Problem
Gas Tank Fill Problem
I have been having a problem when I fill up with gas that I haven't heard of so I am hoping someone has some suggestions as to what the problem might be. When I tried to fill the tank from empty for the last two fillups, I got about 8 gallons in and then the pump shut off and acted like the tank was full (squeeze the lever and it clicks back off). Guage read a little above 1/2 tank. Today, after the pump shut off before the tank was full, I went to another station I use frequently and tried another pump and got another 3.5 gallons in before it shut off like tank was full (and guage read about 3/4 tank). So either time or driving a little allows me to add more gas. Didnt try a third pump as I wanted to leave it a little empty to show service department that something is causing the pump to think the tank is full when it isn't.
I am guessing there is something in the tank that is blocking the pumped gas from getting down the filler tube and that the guage is working correctly but just guessing.
Anyone heard of something like this happening to a vehicle? Will take it in next week but not really sure how to show I really have a problem and isolate it so it can be fixed. Best plan I have come up with is carry a can of gas to service visit and first try to fill it up with a pump, then add gas from can to show its not really full. Second idea is try to fill it, then drive around a little and add more gas (showing the tank fill tube is getting blocked).
Any better suggestions as to how I can diagnose this?

It really sounds like a problem that some of the 1st gen G35s had. It did the exact same thing and there was a TSB to replace the shutter valve to correct this on those models.
I would call the Dealer about it.

I have this issue. My only suggestion is don't try to force more gas in as you'll get it all over, I know, I tried. You can actually here the gas fill the neck, then it just sits there and doesn't drain into the tank... so I drive off with half to three quarters of a tank. I'll have this fixed on my next trip to Infiniti since it's been going on for a few months now.

I have this same problem but found this only happens at certain gas stations. i.e. at a shell station near my house which appears to have older pumps this happens all the time. But if I go to the chevron across the street with newer pumps, I dont have this issue at all... not sure what this means...

Not to happy with dealer visit today. Checked the sending unit, guage, and ran some other electrical test but couldnt find anything wrong....dont think they even dropped the gas tank to look at the valve. Did take it over to station and filled it up with no problems from 3/4 tank. I will go back when its empty and take the guy along with me while I fill it up for next few tanks....all in all I am not impressed.
Mentioned the problems with prior years that had a tsb and the descriptions were the same but unfortunately no tsb for ours yet....bet ones coming however.
Should have expected this since this is the same dealershipo that told me the headlights weren't adjustable (and headlights were only lighting up 50 ft from car).
Worst case is I pay dealer to put in the valve in hopes of fixing things before my wife has problems on the road. Will then try to collect from Infiniti when a TSB is issued.
Will update when I have something else to report.
