shifting in the 6MT

Just wanted to know for those w/ the 6MT, or anyone who drive a manual in general, how far down do you press the clutch when shifting?

I usually got 1/2 way in or less then shift.
I causally mentioned this to another friend w/ a manual in a unrelated conversation and he was like if you dont press the clutch all the way in (to the floor) then it will ruin the transmission???!

I had a manual before this 07 6MT and I never went all way down on the clutch then either...but did have to go like 3/4 way down...I guess the engage point was different.

Any ideas or thoughts?

I could be completely wrong about this, I am not a racer to anything but that never made sense to me.
If you upgrade to a "sports clutch" for example, isnt the idea that the engage point is much shorter so you can shift faster hence accelerate quicker?

All the way, every time. Sports clutches are usually beefier and can handle more power, and offer a more direct (abrupt) engagement feel. I'm no mechanic, but shifting without fully disengaging the clutch will cause premature clutch and pressure plate wear since you're never fully releasing the clutch from the flywheel, and transmission wear probably to the synchros.

If the pedal isn't to the floor, most likely you are not dis-engaging the entire clutch. If you haven't dis-engaged the clutch, you are pre-maturely wearing the clutch.

- When OFF gas, clutch pedal to the floor
- When ON gas, clutch foot to the dead pedal

what? but i always drive with the clutch half way, even during full throttle!

shift around 3500-4000rpm.... and you'll find the shifter just slidding through every gates even if you dont press the cluch all the way to the floor.

With the very high engagement point of the clutch on the G, I never put pedal all the way down to shift gears. From dead still, I can move the pedal out about halfway before hearing or feeling anything. There is way too much play at the end of the pedal travel. This is what the various clutch mods are attempting to alleviate. My other car (03 6MT Tiburon) has a very low clutch engagement point, and a much shorter pedal travel. I really prefer the clutch in the Tiburon to the clutch on the G35.

I dont do it on a regular basis but when I am tryin to move I have pressed on the clutch only about 1/4 the way in and NO grind of any kind. Everything is as smooth as can be. The stick snaps in place just fine and NO odd noises or vibrations...

You're slipping the clutch...

Push it all the way down, quit making excuses.

You'll thank us in years to come when you still have your stock clutch.

Screw that, burn out that crap oem clutch and replace with a good aftermarket. The g clutch is my least favorite thing about this car.

Also, to the original point, the engagement is so high on this clutch, you could shift with only pressing it down a quarter of the way. I doubt seriously that the op is burning his clutch out, but that's his call. If so he should be smelling some clutch stink which would be a good indicator.

oh crap, are you serious about the "clutch stink"??? I have smelled something from time to time and wondered, what the hell is that!!

Me and everyone that i know who drives a stick presses the clutch pedal down all the way.
