Proper procedures for first drive - long one ???

hey guys
i am going to be driving my car quite a bit to get it back to Ottawa. I would take me a good 7 hours or more. I know about not holding onto rpms for too long.. how long is too long LOL and how often should I stop and shut the car for how long etc....

I was thiking every 2 hours for 15 mins might be doable, anything other than that is going to add on alot of time.

comments?

Owner's manual recommends keeping the RPMs under 4K for the first 1200 miles.

Stay off the cruise control. You'll natually vary the RPMs as you drive the 500 miles.

From your average cruise speed, just take it down 10-15mph. It'd be best if you could stop. I'd guess varying the RPM would be best to do with city/highway driving mixed.

No matter what, you can't do what you're trying to do. I'm suggesting you drive the car the way it was meant to.

BTW, how many miles do you have on the car?

Like they said, just take it easy and no cruise control. (if you want to play it safe)

You could even NOT take it easy and use CC and the car will be fine.

Unless you bought it with 0 miles on it, those first (however many) miles were probably all spent at full throttle.

I take it you are picking up your new X in the US.

-get your salesman to show you where everything is, eg : WW resevoir, oil dipstick, coolant resevoir, spare, manuals, jack etc (some of this stuff might seem obvious, but in the winter, in the dark late at night, it might be nice to know where this stuff is on a new vehicle)

-Stay under 4,000 RPM.
-Constantly vary your RPMs, no cruise control, example 80 kmh for 10 minutes than 100 kmh for 10 min, then 110 etc, constantly changing your RPMs on the highway but staying under 4,000 RPM (the odd blip over that won't hurt )
-It would be a good idea to take an exit to slow down every couple of hours.
-no rapid starts or stops.
-take it easy on braking also, no hard braking, you are also braking them in.
-when you pull off a freeway after travelling highway speed do not shut it off immeadiately always let it idle for a minute to cool down, then shut it off.
-use only Premium gas (91).

GOOd luck and have fun

I had to drive four hours back from Dallas to Houston with mine, with about 50 miles on it. I just kept it below 4k, and varied speed constantly - speed up, slow down, sometimes slow way down, and stopped a couple of times. At 13k miles, it's running beautifully.

Did you buy your G in Dallas and drive it back to Houston? What kind of deal did you get there to make your drive worth your while? I have the same concerns about breaking in the car on the freeway if I buy out of town. Thanks.

Well, the situation may be different now. I bought less than a month after the new Gs arrived, and no-one in Houston, Austin or San Antonio was willing to deal (MSRP only...). So bought from Grubbs in Dallas, for around $1,100 below MSRP.

You may be able to get good deals in Houston now, I've sent some friends to North Houston Infiniti; PM me for details and who they talked to.

I have nothing but good things to say about Grubbs tho, Dave Cotroneo was a great sales guy and it was a very positive sale.

I had to make a 250+ mile trip within the break in period. I varied the speed on the hwy and, if traffic was flowing, I would just shift down to 4th gear every 30 minutes or so and drive it in 4th for a couple of minutes, then put it back in 5th. I figured that should provide sufficient variation in RPMs.
