Extended Warranty...

How many of you have done this?

Did you buy the one from Infiniti?

Is it worth it?

I bought the extended warranty on my last car (Volvo S80) and, over the life of the car (sold the car with 13k miles), it paid for itself three times!!! That car was always in the shop! ha ha ha

I just wanted to hear everyones thoughts & see if there was a good place to buy one other than the dealer.

I received a letter yesterday about the extended warranty...

I laughed about it. I won't buy it.

My wife bought a '95 240SX new (recently sold), we drove it for 172k miles and did nothing but oil changes, 1 battery replacement and 1 starter ($600).

We have a '97 Maxima with 107k miles. Nothing but oil changes and 1 rack-n-pinion ($700).

Currently, we also have an '07 Murano and my '07 G35S, both of which have been very hassle-free.

In my experience Nissan/Infiniti vehicles are bulletproof. I wouldn't bother with the warranty.

I contemplated it before my bumper-to-bumper warranty ran out. After driving this car almost a year, and speaking with a friend who has an 03 coupe since new, the extended warranty would've been a waste of money. I bought a $1400 extended warranty on my previous maxima, and it did NOT pay for itself, as that car hardly ever had to be in the shop after the factory warrant ran out. So far, aside from rattles and possible clutch replacement in the not-too-distant future, this car has been spotless....

Not trying to steal your thread, however can you cancel the warranty and get a refund?

I didn't buy the extended warranty at the time I bought my car because:

1. The factory warranty is pretty long.

2. I don't know when I plan on selling or trading in my car and there's a decent chance I will before the factory warranty expires.

3. Even if I were going to keep the car for a long time, there's no telling if my car would get totaled in an accident or get stolen and the extended warranty would've been a waste.

4. You can buy the extended warranty at any time up until the factory warranty expires. Why not invest the money you were going to spend on a warranty at a conservative return of at least 5% - 8% and buy the warranty right before the basic warranty expires?

5. You can probably buy the extended warranty from the internet through another Infiniti dealer for much cheaper (I haven't looked into this for Infiniti, but for my Acura, 7 yr/100K mile extended warranties cost about $1,000 when your car was new or about $1,100 when your care was at or near the expiration of the factory warranty).

That depends on who you buy the warranty from. Some aftermarket warranty companies will allow you to cancel it, then they will pro-rate you the refund depending on years and mileage that you've driven under that warranty. Not sure if the extended ones from Infiniti will do the same though. But.--aftermarket warranties suck....from experience.

I am a believer in getting extended warranties, as long as the price is reasonable. But in this case I've owned a maxima, altima, and now the G and have never had anything go wrong with them. and from reliability info I think it's all worked out in the initial two years of the car... so if something is going to breakdown it will happen early, not 5+years.

My salesman basically told me it's a complete waste... it's rarely used in his shop.

so I decided to skip for this car even though I plan on keeping the car beyond the warranty period.

No extended warranty here. I will buy them on laptop computers but not on my cars.

Usually they give you 30 or 60 days for a full refund. After that you may still cancel it for a prorated refund like you said.

I am going through it now but with Nissan after selling my 350z.

Have this and an '02 Sentra. Sentra has needed a starter, but it was a manufacturing flaw so Nissan paid for it. Other than that, just tires and oil.

No. I did not buy the extended warranty.
If I was buying a Volvo, I would have given the extended warranty serious thought.

well we did get the extended warranty at time of purchase. Call it personal but with all the technology and electical parts in this car and that I keep a car till it dies seemed ok to me for the relatively low cost. Coming from 2 old cars with no high tech stuff figured I don't want to be replacing a ton of fancy electical stuff. Can handle some mechanical stuff but once it gets electical and chasing wiring harness gremlins no thanks
