Steam from under hood- LOTS of it
#33
I remember when I was in high school and I just received my first car a 91' Toyota Corolla. I didn't know much about maintenance and never checked my fluids. Long story short, on the way to school in the early morning notice a lot of steam/smoke coming from my engine bay; ran out of coolant and ended up having to replaced the radiator.

Google "steam from engine 07 G35" and got linked to this old thread.
I went through a touchless car wash just now, the steam was coming out of the engine hood like crazy, it also happened when it was raining hard the last couple of weeks.
I had 1st gen G35, Integra, Maxima, E92 M3, GST....none of the cars I had gives out such heavy steam.
So only 07 G35 have this heavy steam and should considered it normal...wow...can't believe it.

I don't have a sedan, but doing a search on overheating and this thread came up. My car overheated while I was in Wekfest and it did it today again. I opened up my hood and the reservoir tank was realeasing steam the radiator fluid was boiling all the way to the top of the tank, spilling everywhere in my engine bay.
I turned off the car and wiped the radiator fluid, since it was getting on the outside or the car and I didn't know if it was corrosive. I waited for the car to cool down and I open the radiator cap, filled it up with water and closed it. I started the car and it was fine, but I drove 2 more blocks and I see in the instrument panel that it is getting hot again. Lucky I was a couple of blocks away from my destintation TNT and I shut down the car before it started to steam again.
I started to get this problem after I took my car to the dealership for the replacement of the valve body for the oil leak in to the spark plug. I don't know how they are related, but I am thinking that the dealershiped messed something up causing my engine to overheat. My car will be at TNT for a week then I will take it back to the dealership.
I am still going to take it to the dealership, but just curious to know if anyone might have any idea on what might be causing this. Thanks

My guess on all of this is, with the way everything is contained in the engine bay, it's pretty easy for some water to get in through the front during driving rains and be captured in hot areas, maybe on top of the underbelly tray.
I've never had another car do it, but I now understand what's happening.
Still doesn't change how I feel while sitting at a red light in my car with steam pouring out though. LOL

Yes, the first thing I did was check the coolant temp, and everything was normal. I checked under the hood yesterday (not raining), and everything looked normal. So I took it into the dealer yesterday, and got exactly the answer I expected, and the reason why I sometimes regret buying an Infiniti. They basically told me that I'm crazy, and that what I saw was either:
A) a lie
or
B) a gross exaggeration
I expected this from my experience telling them that my brakes squeal unacceptably for a brand new car. I told them about having read in the forums that the '07 G35 Sports often have brake squeal, but they said that it is normal, and that it's a 50:50 chance when you get new brakes that they will squeal, because it depends on the metal content in that specific set of pads. I just thought (quality control??!!??) and gave up.

When anything weird happens, take out the phone, capture a video, take the extra time to extract it and post it. Then show it to the dealer. There's no way they can deny these things happening when there's evidence.

People chill out! Its just water that is retained behind the front grill (after a carwash or rain, snow, etc.) that gets blown onto your motor while driving and as a result steam develops. Ever tried getting out of your car and running your hand over that steam and then smell ur hand hand? If it was radiator fluid your temp. gauge and the odor of the fluid would tell u right away.
