Bike Rack

Hey guys. Just wondering if anyone can suggest a good bike rack for the car. I found one I liked, but it has metal clips which I don't want to risk them scratching the paint.

Anyone have a rack on the back that's good?

Thanks!

don't put that thing on your roof!!!

check out this post...

https://g35driver.com/forums/g35-sedan-v36-2007-08/162275-any-cyclist-what-bike-rack-setup.html

My set-up is post #33, 34 & 35. I really like it.

I had a roof rack on my last car (Volvo S80). it was a factory roof rack so it did not touch the rook of the car anywhere. it was also VERY easy to take on & off.

in my experience...if you go with a Thule roof rack with a "fit kit", you are making a permanent decision. they can be tricky to take on & off. so you will end up leaving it on most of the cycling season. after a year or so...you could run into issues of scratches...paint fading differently, etc.

as much as it pained me to put a hitch on my car, it was the lesser of two evils in my opinion.

Oh no! Thanks for pointing out that post. I did a quick search but didn't see that one.

I got the Saris Bones 2. I guess I'll return it since they say it's bad for the paint!

But the hitch mount is a little more then I was expecting to pay (And I didn't really want to put a hitch on my pretty new car!). Maybe for now I'll just get a sheet to put down in the trunk.

Thanks!

i can't fit my bike in my trunk unless i take off both wheels...and that is just not practical for me.

when i don't want to use my rack...I lay down some towels on the back seat (really thick ones) & put my bike back there. I can fit my bike in the back with only having to take off the front wheel. if you set the back wheel in between the back seat cushion & the front seat you should be able to lay the bike down with the front fork just by the opposite door.

I thought I'd update.

Yakima has come out with an official trunk rack that fits the G35 Sedan (both 2007 & 2008). Actually they came out with 5 different configurations.

The KingJoe2/3 & SuperJoe 2/3 and a base single carrier model.

The best deal seems to be the KingJoe2. If you are a REI member, you'll get it for $103 plus tax if you ship to your local store. or The best deal for non REI members or those who want to ship to their home is for $116 at Amazon.com. holds two bikes and has the best construction to prevent any damage to the car. Just like any other item that would touch your paint surface, don't forget to wash under the mount often to prevent dirt from marring the finish.

Go to Yakima http://www.yakima.com/Product.aspx?Number=8002619 and do a fit check on that model, it's part # 8002619 for the KingJoe2. Or from their main page use the configuration for our cars to see all available parts.

FYI - Thule still has nothing for our car.

Sometimes function over beauty It's a pain to dismantle and stuff in trunk or chance damaging the interior by stuffing in the back. plus the G can only take 1 bike, the rack lets you take 2 or 3.

get a hitch mount rack. It's the second best option for transporting bikes other than a pick up. Unless you have a 45lbs and a 35lbs mountain bike like i do you don't need to fork out that much. I found the best type of hitch mount rack for bikes is a tray style rack. You don't have to fork out that much. Heres a link to a hitch ($126 + shipping maybe another $30 at most)

Depending on what bike you have you can either get a standard hitch mount rack, or a tray style which virtually shouldn't touch your frame depending on what model. For our rack on the matrix we got a Thule T2 rack ordered. It is $324.00 + free shipping. It was a little much, but it's definitely worth not having to worry about your $3000+ bikes falling off. Heres a link to all the racks you are able to get with a hitch style rack.

edit: Prices will vary from about $100 - $500 for hitch racks.

The hitches add a permanent scar to the car (IMO) and cost 4x the amount... I only use it a dozen times a year since most my riding is from and back to my house.

hey guys, I finally got my rack on, here it is! I probably wouldn't put more than one bike on it at a time though

Be careful with a trunk rack, the pads will scuff / scratch the paint unless you pad them with something. I have a Saris Bones, which is a good rack but ended up scuffing the Maxima despite my best efforts with padding. Now have a Yakima hitch rack that goes on the Sequoia, or just pull the wheels and put it in the G's trunk. Pulling the wheels takes approximately 30 seconds, BUT am not looking forward to putting a muddy MTB in the trunk

on my trials bike it takes a lot longer than 30 sec to deal with the wheels (custom chain tensioning) and the 30" handle bars makes it to hard to deal with to put in the trunk so i had to get a rack. i'll keep an eye out for scratches and stuff but i'd rather trade some scratches for bike transportation any day
