Exclamation Passenger airbag issues

Hi yall,

I wonder if this only happen to my G. The passenger airbag many times stayed on although there was someone sitting on the seat. It didn't happen every time but enough times for me to think that there is something wrong with the sensor. Has this happen to anyone else?

My car only has over 1K miles on it. I picked her up about 3 weeks ago.

Thanks,
NamNhi

Weight of passenger? I think the sensor is set at +/-100# so anything less will disable the airbag by design.

Is that like a standard thing for all the automobiles?
It never happened with other cars I have owned.
My girlfriend weights 105 lbs (give or take 3 lbs) and the light usually is on.
Kinda makes me worry a bit.

In the past, airbags always deployed in an accident but there were injusries caused by smaller pasengers and babies in carriers so they have manual overides such as a button, **** or key switch. Nowadays, more and more cars are equipt with weight sensitive switch (deactivation).

I don't know if the sesitivity is adjustable or not. You may have to call the dealer.

I know for sure that it is not set 100 lbs. The saleman told me that it is set at around 30 lbs. My wife is skinny but not that skinny.
So does this only happen to me and isbn1975????

Had my passenger side seat replaced because of this.

It is really ABSURD that this car has the threshold set at < 100lbs!!

My old 300C was more like 35-40lbs..

My wife is around 110lbs and it happens in my car too. I had a 2004 BMW 5 series and I had the same issue on it also. However, it does not happen in my wife's Lexus GX470. Very weird.

Happens to me too. In my car, sometimes it turns on if I have my briefcase on the front seat. Definitely something goofy with it that will need to be looked at when I take it in for my 3k mile change.

It should be set at around 100 lbs before the airbag will turn on. The point is that it won't deploy with someone under 12 years old or under the safe size for the airbag. My son is around 75 lbs and mine always lights up as "off" when he sits in the front seat.

if they are sitting crooked, or not sitting properly, it will turn the airbag off

We tried to sit as straight as humanly possible and that thing still turn on. I will say this again... the sensor is definitely not set at 100 lbs.

The funny thing is that that light will stay on for about 5 or 10 mins before it turn off. It hard to tell whether that airbag is workingggggg.

I smell lawsuits all over if the stupid airbag does not deploy if there is an accident.

true, i never know either when it is on or off, they should be a switch for it, and not automatic, since even if they were too light or sitting a little crooked, i would still want the airbag to deploy

I have had this happen to my car about 4 times since it was new. First time I took it in to the dealer. They appear to have reset the light and said nothing wrong. Well it happen again a few days later when wife set school bag in seat to drive to work. It has happened again a couple of times when she is getting in the car and appears to adjust the seat as she gets in. Air bag light stays on even with her setting in the seat. There have been previous posts with others have the same problem. There is a problem somewhere in the car's design, wiring or computer program I feel. The light never has reset itself.
I found the procedure in the shop manual to reset the passenger air bag light and just do that now instead of taking it in to the dealer.

I don't think some of you are getting the idea of this automatic feature. It IS suppose to turn the airbag off when it senses a lighter than calibrated item on the seat ie. bag, briefcase, small person etc. in the passenger seat. It is design to protect the smaller/lighter passenger from the violent forces of the airbag if deployed.

The sensor is a small pad under seat so if you sit in a way that is confusing the pad, that will also trigger a "airbag-off". If the sensor does not reset itself when the seat is empty or when a heavier person sits on it, then there is a problem and you should get it checked (not just reset) at the dealer. If you are so worried about it (and you should be), get it checked at the dealer. If your dealer just resets it without telling you what's wrong, go to another dealer.

BTW, Chapter #1 of your (07)manual should have this information.

Exactly! And unless there is some difference in my car and everyone else who has posted on here - it is at least over 75 lbs. If I put my purse in the seat - light comes on. If my kid sits in the seat - light comes on. If I or Trey sits in the seat - no light. If there is nothing in the seat - no light. If my sister (who weighs about 130 lbs) sits in the seat - no light. THAT IS HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK!
