So to summarize, the factory iPod kit includes a full iPod plug (including charging) and is best controlled via the iPod?

So that would better allow me to pick my podcast of choice for my daily commute over the aftermarket / Nissan part? I just put an aftermarket unit that does the playlists in my wife's Pilot, and is fine if you just load up a handful of genres into the playlists and hit the random button. Ok for her limited library, but not my 4k song / 100 unplayed podcasts.

If you are looking at an 07, then this is about the best option. I'm assuming that since you are still "on the fence", that you are looking at an 08. If so then, most of these issues don't apply. The factory integration in the 08 is quite good as long as you use either play lists or genres (which are better imo).

I thought I remembered genre listed.

So why use play lists over genres? Doesn't play lists just dump all the songs into one long list?

Last thoughts about the iPod Kit because I'm 100% right...just kidding !

OK. Here is my last take (yeah right) on this thread of integrating the iPod with the infamous G using the iPod Gateway kit :

#1 – I’m happy with it and yes it does have some shortcomings. Would I buy it again. Yes….

#2 – I have an Alpine Stereo with iPod Integration in my truck. There is no latency (how long it takes to scroll through Artists/Songs/etc….). It is so sweet with the Alpine. I had a Pioneer and the latency was bad…much worse than the integration kit I just installed in the G. Previous “releases” of the Alpine had bad latency but were fixed in the latest generation I have(uses a Bus cable and does not use a “gateway” like device like it use to). I have a 60 GIG iPod that was full and even in my Truck where there is little latency it was a pain to scroll (you using the tuner ****) through all the entry’s even though it scanned them quickly. 60 gig was about 7,000 songs. My G is new to me and even before I bought it I decided to decrease the number of songs on the iPod.

#3 – I would NEVER buy a car simply because of the iPod integration. In fact I was very happy playing my iPod via the RCA Inputs in the center console of my 07 G. Only after “discovering” this gem of a forum was I even aware of the integration kit. I have bigger audio issues with my system such as a lack of a “mute” button, or pause option on a CD that is currently playing….

#4 – The best solution is a USB drive that can be scrolled via the audio system. A friend of mine has a USB enabled stereo that can read Mp3’s and he has not used his iPod since he got it. He simply copy’s the songs to his thumb drive a…there you go. That is the way I want to go.

That’s it…..I do like the kit, I listen to audio books as well as music and it has not left my car for two weeks. This is a great forum with great stuff as well as some not so great stuff but as a new G owner I can appreciate the pride and devotion of these “crazy G’s” who share their thoughts and advice as well as opinions. Keep it up!

Ahh...ok. They don't on the 08, so I thought the Nissan part would act the same way.

You know, if anyone else is reading this thread they might think we are all nuts. We may be giving off the vibe that we bought a $45k skin for our iPods.
It's simple. The '07 iPod mod works (Perhaps even better than the '08 OEM version). We can all organize our iPods any way we choose. To each his own.
Now...if I could just find a 30pin to 30pin male/female iPod extension about 6ft long that would be great!

Here is a link to an extension cable......though it's expensive

If you are handy with a soldering iron, here is a link on how to make your own.

Here's a pretty good link for the pinouts. It also includes links on where to order the parts.

Here you go!
I did not start the car in this case, but so you know, the status will still show tempature settings and/or milage in the bottom half of the screen. Everything works normally. The top 'iPod' half shows it's currently using playlist P-T, Artist - Puddle of Mudd, Song Title - Take it all Away and the '5' is the sequential number of the song in this playlist. Hope this helps.
