But did Infiniti/Nissan engineers actually test both the 5A and 6M transmissions before they put them in the G35/350Z?!?

It just seems beyond reasoning that they could overlook something as simple as improving fuel economy in these vehicles. The DE and HR has more than enough low end power to cruise at 2100-2400 RPM @ 75-80mph.....
That's a very good observation. Most other cars in this class revs at around 2000 in top gear @ 60 mph.

I use 93 octane, R+M/M method. Also, they use 10% ethanol which im convinced lowers mpg.

I drive like hell on the weekends and cruise on the highway during the week. I average from 19-21 per tank. I'm at 18.6 right now, it is Friday , I just got my exhaust installed this week....

Nevermind the gas prices, I have also tried the slow foot light foot method, it is fun to experiment and I have seen 26.6 or 27ish at the highest but I am too lead footed for that granny stuff.

I'm only averaging about 13 around LA streets. And i'm not doing any WOT, but not babying it either. I'm guessing my poor mileage is due to

1. a stop sign or light every 100 yards
2. 19 rims and much wider tires
3. i just hit the 5k mark

I wish it were better, but on the freeway at 80 i get around 26ish. I don't mind overall tho. Compared to my 07 Jeep SRT8 - which got 7 around town and 12 on the freeway, I'm very happy. Come to think of it, my 06 Volvo S60R only got around 11 around town - but 28+ on the highway on it's last trip from LA to SF. The turbos suck around town due to the spooling.

I'm very pleased with the overall driveability of this car.

I do wish the 5AT was tuned better - not just for MPG sakes, but also it's a little finicky sometimes.

From San Diego To Denver I got 26.3 mpg on my 6mt. I had cruise control on 80% of the time and it seemed to be a lot more efficient then when I left my lead foot on the pedal :-P
