Inaccurate fuel system readings??
I am curious if anyone has had this issue. My car was always fairly accurate when it came to fuel range and the computer. Lately my car goes down to around a 5-10 mile range on the computer and I fill it up. The car will only take about 15 gallons of fuel when the capacity is around 18 gallons. My range is shorter than it used to be bu my MPG is the same. It's like the tank is holding the extra fuel on one side of the tank and not ransfering over to the passenger side pick up anymore. It used to be an issue with the older 350Z's and G's that had their fuel pumps modified for turbo kits. I am wondering if there is an issue with the stock system in the 07's now with the siphon system that transfers fuel from the drivers side of the tank over the floor hump the passenger side fuel sensor/pump assembly.

Fuel tank also hosts a gauge that measures some aspect of the engine system. I forget what it is at the moment. Regardless, that gauge needs about 3 gallons in the tank to operate, hence the gas indicator is about three gallons short of the actual capacity. The actual fuel capacity is 20 gallons, but apparently the gauge can be damaged if the fuel in the tank goes below the 3 gallon reserve.

'08 G35 w/ only 16 Gallon indicated capacity

Infiniti consumer affairs has no information re this issue and my area dealerships have no idea how much the car should "take" from "empty".
My '08 G35 Journey shuts off the fueling nozzle after only 16.0 Gal. with fuel gage on 'E' mark and the range no longer calculating DTE (shows hyphens). So 20-16 => 4 Gallons left.
Sure, I've never had a vehicle take the tank capacity when "empty" but this is a bit much. How much do you '08 owners manage to put in and what are the gages reading before you do?
Dealer says to bring it in, but how will they test it I wonder...
Thanks!

'08 G35 w/ only 16 Gallon indicated capacity
So here's what I've found out.
CalsonicVQ: Thanks. I found that statement of 3-1/8 gallons left when low fuel warning light comes on in the MWI service manual section, pg7.
I also found that fuel level is ~5-1/4 Gal less than full when fuel gage needle indicates ~3/4 of the major tick spacing below the F. i.e. the needle is just above the major tick indicating ~ 3/4 full. My gage's needle is at top left of the F when tank is as full as I can get it. Also that tank's capacity is 20-1/8 U.S. gallons.
Which gets us to the problem of getting it full.
After lots of searching and reading (that I should have done prior to my first post) I discovered that past G35 models had plenty of problems being fueled to full capacity.
While the service manager at my dealership assures me the '08 (maybe '07) are all new, my experience and that of others indicates Infiniti still has some work to do. At least, in educating it's customers about this issue. He also confirmed the split gas tank and that there is a pump to shuttle fuel to the other side, but that's a hard thing to do. Chronically running at very low fuel levels may damage the fuel pump as it is cooled by the fuel.
Basically it appears that fast pumping rates, to get people through gas stations quickly these days, doesn't give the fuel emission/recovery system time to vent. The result is the nozzle gets shut off. I found even after an hour of sitting, I couldn't add fuel to a non full tank. FWIW, I noticed that there's no hiss when opening the fuel cap like my prior cars of other makes had.
However, If I pump slowly (not the nozzle's maximum rate) AND I don't fully insert the nozzle, I can fully fill the tank. Meaning I can put in what it seems it should be taking based on gage indications and the reference values I mentioned above. Also when full now, the fuel gage needle is at the upper left of the F.
So, pump slowly, back out the nozzle and try lifting the nozzle handle and you may also be able to fully fuel your ride and get predictable results.
While I finally found an Infiniti service guy who was responsive and helpful about this, the conversations with others were a waste of time and disappointing.
Given the history of the G35 with regard to this issue, I don't think that's acceptable.
Thanks for the help (postings of PI and such excluded) and reading all this .

That was very useful informatino.
I found out that i could sometimes not fill the car all the way up to full (even the gauge doesnt go past FULL). and this makes sense!!
What a silly design!
