Correct Invoice Pricing: edmunds or kbb?

Hi all, I'm fairly new to the forums. Decided it's time for a new car and after research I'm dead set on a G35 Sport . I've been emailing a couple dealers in Texas to see what kind of deal I can get. I've researched invoice pricing on edmunds.com and kbb.com and they are different (kbb.com is higher). I was wondering if anyone knows which one is correct? I'm assuming kbb.com is correct with the recent increase in pricing. Anyone know for sure?

Also if anyone can refer me to a good salesman in Texas (preferably Dallas) that will work a good deal for me, let me know! So far the best I have been quoted is $300 over invoice before TT&L. Thanks in advance and can't wait to join the club!!!

I'm not sure which one is correct, but you could just look at the sport's sticker and see the MSRP and know which one is correct.

Invoice is not MSRP. It's less.

Virus, Good call man. I priced with options on both and edmunds spit out the correct MSRP. Thats weird that one dealership in Dallas would use edmunds (lower prices) pricing, yet another dealer I was emailing with in Houston was using the kbb.com figures. I guess the Dallas dealership didn't do a price increase??

Another question guys, I have been negotiating through email and the dealer from Dallas told me "Another thing to consider is we do not give our cost to these websites. They are guessing".

I told him the invoice price and he basically said kbb.com and edmunds pull numbers out of thin air and post them as invoice pricing, and also that the prices people posted that they paid are basically made up because "Dealerships do not sell cars at invoice, but have you noticed that everyone says they bought there car at invoice? I am not saying we sell them at sticker but we do have to make a profit".

I didn't demand invoice price from him, but I just stated I have been researching and have seen numerous people by at, near, and even a few below invoice. Should I just move on to the next dealership?

It depends on the build date. Cars built and delivered to the dealer after April 1 (I believe) have higher invoice and MSRP's by up to $400. Most dealers will have a combination on their lot, especially if they are a low volume dealer.

I was checking one dealers inventory and they had two of the same identical car but one was $400 higher. The other has been sitting on the lot longer.

Thats a lie. The invoice is set by the manufacturer. There may be some small variance by region but not within the same state. Some makers do price slightly different for different regions of the country.

The invoice pricing is not that difficult to come by and I would bet both kbb and edmunds have good sources, possibly even the manufacturer themselves.

I agree that the dealer has to make money but they have several "hidden" revenue sources such as dealer hold back and sales incentives. They also make much money from service and taking your trade in that they paid you $3000 for and turning it around selling for $4000.

The sales guy commissions are usually based upon profit as measured by sales price over invoice.

I think that Infiniti has higher quality sales people than this article portrays but some of the same pricing practices are relevant.

Dave Cotroneo - Grubbs, Dallas: Best sales guy I've ever worked with, gave me a way bigger discount than anyone else would in Nov. '07. PM me for details.

Martin (the French guy ) - North Houston Infiniti: He was second, and a couple of my friends have bought from him. Their service dept has done good work for me too.

$300 over Edmunds published invoice price is not bad. If the dealer wont go any lower, ask if they will throw in other incentives (free oil changes, car washes, etc.) I got free scheduled maintenace for the first 24 months or 24,000 miles when I purchased in Houston.

You may also want to consider Grubbs Infiniti in San Antonio. They offer a "one simple price" plan that sets prices based on the time a car has been on the lot. However, at the time I was shopping the best they could offer on my configuration was $200 over invoice.

Problem is the guy (Grubbs Dallas) emailed me saying he'll give me $300 over invoice, but they only have one sport in stock and it's not what I'm looking for. He told me he'd find me one, but he's not very good at communicating via email and he's their internet sales guy.

Best quote I got on specific vehicle was $34,261 for a Black/Black Sport with premium as the only option (roughly $945 over invoice). This was at Southwest Infiniti in Houston. The car was sold last week. What do you guys think about the price? Think I could do better?

The invoice has apparently gone up, so it'll probably depend on when the car was delivered. A car delivered a week or two I was looking @ had the higher invoice.

Infiniti is probably priming the pump so the new 7-speed 2009's only go up another $500 (on top of the current bump). couldn't resist

Houston market is high for whatever reason. Not everyone is making millions on the price of oil in this town!
