Cruise control

Hi all,

I have an 08 sedan that is 2 months old today.

Question about cruise control (regular old cruise control, not intelligent). Is it normal for the cruise control to basically not work when going downhill? I'm not talking mountains or anything, just a small hill. If I have the cruise set at 55 mph, by the time I get to the bottom of a hill it'll be at 65 or even higher. That can't be normal, right?

Just wondering because I called the dealership and the service guy said it was normal and there was nothing they could do about it. I told him there's a TSB for the 07s for this exact thing and he said they changed the 08s so that if the grade of the hill is 5% or greater, the cruise control won't hold the car back. (Honestly, I'm not even sure how steep a 5% grade is...these hills I regularly drive on are not steep. I live near Charlotte, NC, so it's fairly flat with some rolling hills.)

So is he right? Basically my cruise control is worthless unless I'm driving on flat roads all the time?

Thanks!
Jenny

I don't think it is normal for your cruise control to act that way. Especially on the kind of decline you're talking about. Your service guy is correct about the cruise control downhill surge for the '07s...

I would take your service guy for a ride and show him what happens when you drive on the same hill...hopefully he can do something about it after you show him proof. good luck

No that's not normal. I just completed a 22 hour drive in my 5 month old '08 G. Cruse control held speed within 2 or 3 mph going up and down hills. Even on reasonably steep grades.

has anyone noticed how fast the G goes when going uphill, I am not talking about when using cruise cruise control but during spirited driving. I wouldnt be suprised if the 0-60 going uphill is very very close to the 0-60 on a flat surface

Yep, I've definitely noticed that. It has to do with your username!

I have notice in my '08 sedan that when I go down a small hill the cruise control basicly disengages to slow the car but when I get 3 - 4 mph below the set speed it accelerates quickly to compensate. My '06 sedan stayed very close to the set speed, about +- 1 mph, in the same area. To me this sounds like a "feedback" problem in the cruise control computer.

Are these hills steep enough that engine compression can't slow the G down enough? In other words, I don't think the cruise can ever activate the brakes, and I've been on hills that required I stay in 1st or 2nd to stop from continually accelerating. Not many though...
