Isn't that what the synchros are there for? Would a fair amount of time equal only 20k?

No that is perfectly ok as long as you Rev-match and dont over rev the engine by choosing a gear that is too low which hits the rev limiter, other than that it is PERFECTLY acceptable and will not cause any damage as long as you rev match and do it correctly.

Yes it does. At the minimum you should be revmatching, and double clutching if you skip gears on downshifts (faster than going down gear by gear if you're doing a 6->3 shift)

You should anticipate your shifts and already be in gear

Remember this: the G's tranny is close ratio, and the synchros are designed to equalize a certain amount of RPM gap. When you skip gears, you are drastically increasing this RPM gap.

The vette's synchros are designed for it, the G's is not. Otherwise, our 6th gear synchros would look the same as 2nd gear.

Heel-toe is a revmatched downshift *while braking*.

"just" revmatching is a much simpler ordeal.

Why would you heel-toe to pass someone? You're not taking a turn on a race track, you just want accelarate to a higher rpm in anticipation of where the rpm will be in that gear and not brake ...

Just rev-match the car which is extremly simple(Clutch in, gear neutral, match the anticipated rev(you'll get it in time just a little extra to allow yourself time to put car in gear and let the clutch out) put in gear and let the clutch out, butter smooth shifts without damage) or you can double clutch which is not necessary.

With this you will be ok as you are not making your syncro's do too much work for you, 95% of time i am able to rev match within 100rpm range and the shifts are butter smooth with little to no work for the syncro's. G/L

Heel-toe would involve rapidly breaking while downshifting and using the heel of your foot on the gas pedal to blip the trottle to ease weight transfer into a corner and prevent rapid balance shift causing a loss of control while also ensuring the proper gear is selected for exiting the turn. While I'd like to give you an A for effort, I'll have to give you an F for content.

Wow, I thought there would have been some support in here. My complaint was the grinding, but the trans was replaced because of the input shaft bearing.

I think the support you're receiving is in the form of advice. You got a new transmission under warranty which is great. You get to start over...but this time, if you need to go from 6th to 4th for quick passing, go 6th to 5th, then 5th to 4th. You don't need to release the clutch in 5th gear. As long as your took it from 6th to 5th, your synchros did their job...they engaged the 5th gear onto the input shaft which is spinning at the speed at which the vehicle is travelling. You can then shift to 4th feeling confident you're shifting in a manner that is much safer on the synchros.

So, without further dilution of the point.

Clutch in. Shift from 6th to 5th. Shift from 5th to 4th. Rev match if you'd like to decrease load shock to the drivetrain. Otherwise, clutch out and throttle in.

what do you mean?

do you mean every one telling you how to shift?
ehh thats the forums for you.
every one knows best.

there are only a select few people on here that actually know what they are talking about. you will eventually find them.

as for most every one else, they each will have good points here and there, but take every thing that is said with some salt.

look at me for an example, i think every one is an *** until proven otherwise,

and i, myself, am an *** hole.

happy shifting
