window trim overlay?

Has anyone seen or done window trim overlays? I want to black out the chrome but am not willing to paint. I searched the site forever but didn't find anything.

I know there is a tape available...some guys on CherokeeSRT8 did it to their SRT's - I was gong to do mine, but never got around to it.

I'll hunt around over there to see if I can find out.

I'll get back if I find anything.

Yeah I've seen the trimbrite stuff but haven't seen anyone on here who's applied it. Maybe I'll buy a roll and try it on a small section to see how it turns out. It's relatively cheap.

re: powdercoating - won't that cause fitment issues? I've had issues with powdercoating before on motorcycle frames, e.g. parts not fitting where they should due to the added thickness. I wouldn't mind powdercoating the grille though. I still can't believe there's not just a simple replacement matte black plastic grille out there.

i bought some today and tried it out, its pretty easy as long as you take your time (and looks pretty good), biggest problem i found was cutting the piece down and tucking it around the trim without messing anything up, so i need to find out if theres a way to take it off without ruining it

Electrical tape is cheaper!

I'd rather see something semi-clear that offers a black chrome look after the application.
Personally, I like the look of the chrome trim on our G's

guys, don’t plan on powder coating... you'll find that when you take the trim off there is molded plastic behind - it can not go in oven...

I went this route a few years ago (at the time I was the only one interested in getting rid of the hideous polished aluminum trim, now it seems to be a common trend)…

I originally planed to powder coat, once the pieces were off the car I realized it couldn’t be done – so I was going to have it anodized… the belt trim (the flat piece along the top of door) has molded rubber that can not be replaced if removed, so anodizing was out of the question…

I ended up painting mine (no one else that I know of had done it at the time)… it’s been re-painted once (different color).

I talked with Andy (bluebatmobile that does overlays) about getting vinyl to cover – I thought he was looking into it but haven’t heard anything for a while…

I also went to a vinyl graphics place they does decals and car wraps… they said they could do it, but I wanted a smoked color or black chrome color and they didn’t have any vinyl that was the right look… This is a good option if you can find a color that you like.

So mine remains painted.

Since I did this years ago – I have found a place that can black chrome them… I considered it, but sinceI’ve already had the trim off twice and painted twice I don’t want to deal with it anymore… some day I might buy all new trim and get it black chromed… if anyone is interested in the place that does it, I’ll look up their number.

Just thought Id share with you guys so you don’t waste your time with stuff I’ve already tried.

I'm interested in getting it in dark chrome, but i'm in Wisc lol. I was thinking of just getting all the chrome bits tinted, wouldn't that give them all a dark chrome look?

yep, that would be the cheapest alternative... and probably easiest.

I would suggest someone put together a feeler to see how many people would be interested in overlays (tint) and PM bluebatmobile to see if he will put together kits...

The biggest issue with vinyl is having it cut to fit - but like I said above, any vinyl place that does decals and wraps should be able to custom cut for you.

You wont be able to just go to a window tint type place... first of all thats the wrong material and 2nd, they arent going to cut for this application.

If there is enough interest I bet bluebat would make some.
