Urgent Tire Help!

hey guys, i need responses asap as i need these tires before i leave on jan.2 and will be ordering them from tirerack, but they will be a christmas gift.

i have an 08 sport so my OEM tire sizes are as follows:
Front- 225/50/18 sidewall- 4.4 inches
Rear- 245/45/18 sidewall- 4.3 inches

As we all know, oem tires arent really that great and are super expensive. i had dunlop sport maxx's on my old g and i loved them. im looking at these sizes

Front- 235/40/18 sidewall- 3.7 inches
Rear- 255/35/18 sidewall- 3.5 inches

i knwo its smaller than stock, will this be fine????? please, any advice is appriciated, and if you guys have any other tires to suggest for the sport wheels im all ears.

THANKS!

you rear needs to be taller then front.

So get a bigger sidewall for the rear.

235/255 is a good width, you don't wanna go too much over 255 for the rear

you can also do 245 on the front if you want.

Wow you are way off on your sizes.
Just the rear tire going from 245/45/18 to 255/35/18 your speedo will be off 6.2% . The new size is 1.7" smaller diameter. Thats too much. It is best to stay within 2% or better.

255/45/18 for the back would put you much closer to stock diameter
245/45/18 or 235/45/18 would be good for the front

Quite a few of us are running 235/50/18 front, and 255/45/18 rear. That really expands your tire choices; pics are available in the Tech forum (where this thread is moving )

Here's a thread that may be of interest, the pics of my current tires are on page two, I've got about 6k miles since I posted those pics and am very happy w/ the tires and performance thus far.

how about 225/40 Front and 255/40 Rear. its about .3 inch total lost in diameter from the stock sizes but these two are nearly identical with both having 4.0inch sidewalls.

I ran 255/40/18 and the diameter was too small, and I didn't like the error in my speedo so I got rid of them. Going smaller diameter like that also gives you more tire gap. But if that is what you want go for it.

Your calculations are out comparing 245/45/18 with 255/40/18. It is not .3" total lost in diameter it is more than double that , it is .7" difference in diameter.

LOL, I had to double check it myself

Here: http://www.canadiandriver.com/tools/tirecalc/tirecalc.htm This is one of my favourite tire calculators for comparing tire sizes

I run 245/45/18s on my front rims and 255/45/18s in back. Actually a better fit than stock if you go by the design rim width on tirerack. Will never go back to the stock tire sizes, these sizes are ideal.

It's more important what you buy than where you buy

In fact, I disagree with your premise: OEM tires aren't all that great and are super expensive. #1. Our OE tires are pretty great. #2 Cheap tires will ruin what is now a great car. You've got 18 inch wheels, so expect to pay $800+. It comes with the territory. Do your research on Tire Rack, etc., then buy locally. This is the biggest decision you've got as an owner, and there is no upside to rushing it. FWIW, I chose Sumitomo HTRZ IIIs and I believe they are just as good, will wear a little longer, and they are a little cheaper. That's about the best you can hope for.

It sounds like you've accepted that you can't go wild on changes to size, I would say its the same for treadwear rating - don't go from 140 to 500+. Good luck, and let us know how it works out.
