Bring it to a shop that does proffesional work. Chipping is more than likely due to bad prep work. Painting plastic is much different than metal since it requires diff adhesion promotors, flex components and prep is key. I had mine painted gloss black by a proffesional who does high end custom work only and the grill is flawless. If its done properly, the only way the paint would chip off is if it was hit with something head on and it took a chunk of plastic off with it too.

has anyone wrapped a grill with 3M or overlay vinyl?

I know it'd be a PITA to do, but it would sure help solve chipping.

vinyl is good advice. I had a few porsche in the 90's and once bought the black "shark fin" material seen in front of the rear wheel of a 911 turbo, wide body. That stuff is indestructable. Something like that would not only look good but would NEVER chip. In my opinion the chrome on our grills is just too brittle. Use a flex agent like they use in urethane bumper paint to make it flex, that would be a good painting option.

But, I'm afraid that they might start chipping too.

well iv had mine for a month now and i go through this route everyday with construction sote which has a lot of trcks kicking around debris and stuff but so far not even a single chip or pit, the best part is that the paint is mettalic like which allows to hide any imperfections that might come in the future, but so far very pleased!
