I'm looking to purchase a new car by the summer. I'm deciding between a 06-07 6mt G35 Coupe or a 07+ 6mt Sedan Sport. My third option is to wait a year and buy the g37.

How does the 2nd Gen Sport Sedan handling compare to the 1st generation coupes? I'm not looking for a track car but from time to time I would love to head out to the track and run a few laps. I'm young and don't really have the need for the 4 doors. How does the sedan compare with the g37/g35 Coupe handling wise?

I see only a few sedans that actually track their cars. I also don't want to buy the sedan and end spending a few thousand on suspension upgrades.

Basically I'm just wondering how the sedan handles compared to the coupes. How does a longer wheel base affect the vehicle on the track?

I'm trying to avoid the oil consumption issue with the rev-up engines. I've been with pondering about this decision for quite some time now.

Like stated 2nd gen sedan SPORTS handles much better than the older coupes, but you have to get the feel yourself to know, as my freind has a 06 G coupe and i have the 07 Sedan Sports with 4was and i can feel a WORLD of sifference, so if youre gonna spend so much money go ahead and drive both then see which one you like better.

And the 2nd gen sedan looks better IMO as well!

 

This says a lot coming from a G35 Coupe owner..

I posted this in the Sedan thread so mostly all sedan owners will chime in and of course say that their sedan outperforms the coupe.

Anyone else have any experience with the sedan and coupe?

If both cars are well driven, there is no difference in handling department.
Remember don't confuse "feel" of a car with pushing it to its limits. Limits are very similar in both cars.

 

^ I gaurantee you that there is a difference in handling in the older coupe(06 specific from my experience) and my 07 Sport sedan, not sure if its to do with the 4was or just the beefier sways and harder suspension than the coupe.

But i basically get to drive the coupe on will and i have tried pushing it in same locations and i feel and experience a LOT of difference at one limit the coupe starts to feel loose before i have to let off the throttle a bit to keep it from oversteering while in the sedan in same location i can to higher limits without feeling nervy or loose. Also the sedan does not "bounce off" of bumps in roads as much as i feel on the coupe. Hope it helps but that is MY experience that might help the buyer in his decision but like i said before you SHOULD drive both cars.

You might be right since u said it is a familiar stretch of road that you are familiar with. In my case i, personally have seen both in action with good drivers behind the wheel and comparing to my to my modded first gen, it took me the same amount of effort to keep up both of them in different times. I will say though that the 05 coupe driver was a professional go-kart driver. But again i can not disagree with you, although i would imagine that the 07+sedan will be more stable because of a better overall chassis. I have driven both cars but not to a point where I came really close to their limits. My post was based on a 3rd person observation only.

 

I've driven my '07 sedan on the track, and can only compare it to a (spirited...) test drive in an '06 coupe. It felt like the coupe hugs the ground better in turns, but with the gen 2 sedans you get much more acceleration out of the corners, and better brakes.

 

^ Fully understood(Klubbheads) and yes the driver has a lot to do with it like you said, thats why my suggestion for the OP to drive both and then get the feel for it, i am pretty good at pushing these cars to their limits just before they are about to kick out and then reel them in .

Also cant wait to see you get the 370z MT, read that it's S has the auto rev match on downshifts seems like a really neat feature though i like doing it myself, at times if it does it fast enough autmotically it can make driving really smooth and easy on the MT, lets see how that goes...

 

Interesting, was the coupe 6mt or auto with sport package? I've driven a 06' coupe with the sport package and it sure grips the road on hard turns.

The coupe was actually my cousins but it was a lease so I can no longer compare the new sedan to it. He now is driving a 08' G35 X. The handling is a day and night difference. The coupe definitely feels more controlled and glued to the pavement.

The 2nd Gen Sport model is supposedly 40% stiffer than the X. Seems like I need to test drive a Sport Sedan to see the difference. The Auto and MT Sport sedans are identical except for the transmission right?

Has anyone test drove the base or X model and compared the handling to the sport?

the coupe is auto with aero/sports package rims and all. And if you search around you can see that there is a big difference in the suspensions on the X and Sports by comparing their sway bar sizes, spring rates and such, hope that helps.

I had been driving the coupe for a while before i finally got my sedan so i have had the feel for both for a while now, but i cant compare the X with the coupe as i havent driven the X, but i did test drive the Journey at the suspension seemed a BIT "squishy" with more body roll for sure though.

 

I just bought an '08 G35 sedan 6MT sport in August 2008 and while making my decision test drove a few non-sport G35 models including the X (AWD). I also test drove the G37 coupe. The G37 is a heavier car than the G35 sedan due to all the structural stiffening that goes into the coupe, so engine performance in the G37 is negated by the increased weight between them even though it a higher rated horse-power engine. The Sport edition sedan that I have has a bit stiffer suspension feel than the non-sport models. I didn't get a good feel for the differences between off the line starts between the AWD and the sport model as I drove them so far apart from one another.

 

Yeah, thanks for your feedback. The g37 is a bit on the heavy side. The g35 sedan will take it on a 1/4 mile but on the track I believe the G37 will get faster times.

 

Wheel base on coupe and sedan is same.
