Have a nice long scratch about a foot long in th rear bumper of my Obsedian Black 2007 G35X. Is it possible to "repair" it with touch up paint DIY. You see the white in the scratch. Someone gave me a present, as I always try to use New Car descretion as to where I park. But, hey I live in the NYC area, park in parking garages on occasion. I have a couple of other scratches in the body work also showing some 'white". Man, the paint job is sooooo friggin thin.

I share your pain - in NYC, your car isn't scratch and ding safe even in a parking garage, and if you street park you're nearly guaranteed to have both after not too long. Some (like myself) just give up and collect dings until it gets past a certain aesthetic tolerance point As for DYI repair, there are multiple threads on the subject - it all depends on the depth/type of the scratch.

Hydro: Does the reference of How deep the scratch is mean in the Bumper too? The body scratches - either I'll attempt it with touch up paint, but the Bumper Im not sure of. It may F___k it up.

Like HYDROERIC2003 said. Depends how deep it is. Clearcoat can often be repaired.
I had these in my rear bumber last year. You could see a feel the depth of the scratches. My buddy wet sanded, polished and buffed them out.

I have a similar scratch, although just one line down. I bought the factory touchup with clear coat. It really does not look that much better. Sure the paint color matches now but the bumper is not smooth were the scratch is and reflects light differently--probably just as noticeable.

yeah i mean if you can catch it with your nail it's something that can't be buffed out and it needs to be sanded.

I would recommend getting a professional to touch it up. if you do it yourself you're just asking for trouble. touch up service can probably run anywhere from 120-200 dollars but the area will look brand new.

My bumper in the pics was scratch by my garage door hinge. Luckily it didn't go through the paint.

picus did a DIY on using touch up paint. You can get fantastic results with it, but it's super tedious to do and requires a certain amt of skill. You basically have to fill in the scratch with touchup paint using an applicator like a toothpick. The brush that comes with touchup paint is completely useless as it puts on way too much paint in too wide of a swath. After you've filled in the scratch with touchup paint, you have to do the wet sanding thing until it's nice and smooth. The tricky part is, you don't want to sand through the unscratched portions of the paint.
