I saw a flat black G35 sedan fly past me doing 95+ on the 118 last Friday (I was doing ~80). If you just slowed down, you probably wouldn't be in this situation.

They do not just take you to jail, and impound your car for doing 80mph. You were probally weaving in and out of traffic on a street with a posted speed limit of 45 or something. Reckless driving charge maybe? Sounds like it to me, an unfortunate lesson.
