Want a G, but need to drive 20k a year and have some concerns...

Hey guys,

I'm looking at a lot of options for a new car including a 2007 G35, 3rd generation TL, new altima or a new mazda3 all in the $25k price range. A G35 is my dream car, but my commute is 75 miles a day and I've heard these cars eat up tires and gas. For these reasons, I'm leaning towards a used TL, which is not in the same class performance wise. I don't drive my cars hard, but I'd rather have 300hp and RWD than 260hp and FWD when I need to drive hard . So i had a few questions.

1. Is the tire wear that bad? If I get less performance oriented tires, how long could I expect a set of tires to last on A/T models? What about if I got the 6MT?

2. What type of gas mileage could I get on a freeway commute at 70-75 mph on cruise control?

Thanks in advance guys.

Tire wear is relative, you could get the same tires that come on a G and place them on the TL and you'd experience the same level of tire wear.

I'm getting 22 to 23 on roughly 70% freeway with similar number of miles/day as you - and i'm not particularly easy on the gas.

I'd get a TL... That's what i was planning to get before my G but i decided not to get a Honda/Acura because I've had 3 cars from the Honda family. You get more out of the TL like navi, etc... for the price of $25 or lower. Also it's reliable and would save gas.

If you don't get the sport package, I think the tires on the 17" wheels will last much longer than the sport bridgestones. Either way you can replace the tires with longer lasting tires and sacrifice a little bit of performance.

You can easily get 25+ cruise controlling at that speed

I put over 20,000mi on my car in the first year. It's been through a lot and has held up very well. I got 20,000 out of my stock Bridgestones driving pretty hard (rears were bald, fronts still had decent tread heh). I can't see why you shouldn't be able to get twice that with less performance oriented all-seasons.

When I had my '06 G35 6MT, I could average about 26-28 on the highway and well over 500 miles to the tank. After 50k miles, I had more than 78% of pad left. I would engine brake as much as possible (I think this is also why I didn't have the oil consumption issues - personal opinion don't jump all over me!). I hit the warning mark on the stock Bridgestone tires at 23k, and purchased a set of four 245/45/R18 Yokohama tires with a 60k mileage guarantee for $800. When I traded the car in at 50k miles, I had more than 60% left on the tires. When I would run into G35 drivers at the gas station, they would complain about chewing up the front pads - I never experienced it.

I know you asked about the '07 model, but I hope my '06 experience helps!

I have 20K now on my 2007 G35X. Goodyear RSAs are approaching replacement time. Have the car over 2 1/2 years used for 80 Mile commutes (40 miles each way) initially, now work in Manhattan so it has become a train commuter. 3 miles back and forth to the train station. Man, I miss getting behind the wheel for the ride home EXCEPT for the traffic times (in and around the Long Island area, there is ALWAYS traffic). IMO, if you are going to commute in a car, there should be some "fun" to it. Acura TL is a good car, almost got that in April 2007, but the G35X with AWD [which works unbelievably well] was the BEST deal overall. IMO, I wouldn't let tires b/c they do all vary on wear RSAs haev only a 220 treadwear rating, most performance tires are similar), be the deciding factor. You have to really LIKE the car...BTW, highway MPGs for me 75% highway, I have been getting 22-23,locally Much worse, But I love the DS mode.

I have a 2007 G35x and it already has 35K+ on it (weekly commute between NYC and Long Island will do that). With roughly 50-50 highway/city mileage split, I am averaging 18.6 MPG (that's with X and ~20 Drive Sport semi-auto mode). I replaced Goodyear RS-A's at 32K (they still had ~5K left in them) with Goodyear Eagle GTs which should last much longer. Non-AWD G's mileage should be at least 1 MPG better than mine. Back in 2007 when I was buying, I was also considering a TL but with RWD-flavor AWD, more HP and a newer shape + very competitive pricing the G won hands-down. I personally think that the new TL's front end is butt-ugly and would never consider it now if I had to make a choice. Another car I would look at is the Audi A4, but IMO the G35 beats it performance/price wise and obviously if you don't need/want AWD then it's something to consider.

Not every day - 2x a week (once there and once back, both reverse-commute). Otherwise, I would have 50+K now... no job is worth a daily NYC-Suffolk Cty commute.

I just passed 27k on a 08 G35x. I average about 70% highway at about 80mph. I get 22-23 mpg average.

So far, stock tires have plenty of tread left. I think I'll easily get 40k out of them so I must not be as aggressive as most.

OCADA, buy the car you wanted a year ago, when gas was $4.25, because it's going back there. Give yourself some breathing room, because, let's face it, you can get 22, or you can get 33, on your commute with cars available today. It's just math that you will be buying either 909 gallons at 22 mpg, or 606 at 33 mpg. At $4.25 the difference is $1300.

I put 35k miles on the G in the first year. Swapped to 19" wheels and cheap cheap Kumhos the first week, got 27k out of those and am on my second set; Bridgestones this time.

Car is holding up great.

I drive my G35 about 30-35 miles each way daily, average about 18-19 mpg (mostly red light traffic, not much freeway). But I love all the features my 07 has... Gas milage sucks, but I've learned to live with it. I had an older TL, which only got ~22-23 mpg, so I'm not complaining TOO much. Not like I came from a civic that got 30+ mpg...

The only reason to consider the TL is because of its gas mileage other than that its all G35
