Unhappy WTF!!! way to start the new year..

Ok, I was driving home from work last night about 7pm or so.. cruising on the 55 south bound and all of sudden CRACK!!!! I hear a loud crack sound as if I just got shot.. and as expected, I find about a dime size crack right infront of the passenger side of the front windshield. I was so sad & pissed at the same time. The crack has not really spyder-webbed anywhere yet but I am scared that if I just leave it alone, it will over time.

What are some cost effective options to get this repaired..
  • Is there anyway to treat this so it doesn't cause any further damage to the windshield?
  • Or do I have to replace the whole windshield?
  • Any good shops in OC area that specialize in auto glass?

I am just really pissed b/c this is going to just cost me extra $$$ that I could've used on better things....

I've already spent over 2G's into the G in the past month or so...

Ok, rant over.

Anyway I appreciate any advice in advance.

When this happened to me in my other car I went to Autozone and bought the best crack filler they had. Filled in the crack pretty good and all I saw months later was a very small chip. Not really even noticeable.

Most insurance companies replace cracked windshields for free. Mine cracked years back, didnt even have to pay my deductable.

^ How was this done w/o paying the deductible? What insurance do you have.. I have allstate and highly doubt they would just fix it for free

Honestly I dont know or care... I didnt have to pay squat. Its classified under an act of God or unavoidable road hazard probably.... AllState, State Farm, Geico, and all those bigger insurance companies do nothing but jerk you around becuz theyre huge and they can.

I was with Acuity (based out of Sheboygan, WI) when it happened to me. Im now with Ameriprise (based out of Green Bay). I found that sticking with your home state insurance companies gets you way better rates and coverage

And finding out if your insurance will fix it for free is only a phone call away, why not call when something like this happens?

You can get it repaired at any glass place since it's on the passenger side. After the repair you'll still have the crack there but the patch won't get any bigger. Repair now and replace later..

Anyone know any reputable autoglass shops around OC?
I definitely don't feel comfortable taking my car to just any shop.

Why don't you try this.....call them and ask!!! I used to have allstate and they fixed my cracked window, no deduct. It's called glass break coverage and it's included on most policies. Maybe you are uninformed or inexperienced, but this is normal practice and there is nothing strange about this.

Sheez, from your tone and the title of this thread, I was expecting a totaled car. Relax and call your insurance company. I chipped my windshield the first week I got my car. One very simple phone call to my insurance agent, and they sent out a repair guy who fixed the chip in a few minutes.

another thought: if there is no sign of impact, i'm pretty sure you can take it to the dealer - they should replace it as defective (or improperly applied).

But it clearly looks like a rock that caused the damage.. I dont think the dealership will let that one fly

Have it repaired. It won't completely disappear but it won't spread.
