Fyi, some states are required by law to cover windshield replacement/repair w/o deductible. Unfortunately CA is not one of them.

So basically, it is up to the insurance company to cover the repair or not.

Allstate in CA will cover repair w/o duductible but not replacement.

Quick lesson -> there are "Comprehensive" and "Collision" coverages (among a few others but those are a different subject)

Collision ->
The vehicle is moving it comes in contact with something. If something hits the vehicle while it is moving (ie: a rock) then it is Comprehensive. However aforementioned rule does not apply to objects weighing over 2000lbs (ie: a car...or...building...). Yes, the insurance companies are well aware of moving buildings and are working on a patch, however the patch notes have yet to be released.

Comprehensive ->
Everything else

They have two different deductibles as they are two different forms of coverage. Unless you have a beater you want/need both of these.

Most auto insurance companies have windshield replacement as a separate component of the main policy. Some (as indicated above) may not have a deductible. Many have about $100 deductibles.

The only caution I would give you is to demand an OEM windshield. Especially if you have rain sensing wipers. If you request OEM, they usually have to give it to you. We just went through this with State Farm on my wife's Lexus. I didn't want an aftermarket windshield due to the rain sensor setup (I know that the sensor isn't in the windshield but that was a great reason to demand OEM). You never know the quality of the aftermarket stuff - distortions, sound dampening, etc.

I also called my Lexus dealer and asked who they use to replace windshields on their used vehicles, customer vehicles, etc. and had State Farm work with them to authorize the ordering and installation by someone that the dealer uses.

If you can do that with your Infiniti dealer and use someone they tend to trust it might make for a better install experience. They don't want any chuck in a truck slapping windshields in their cars if they might not do it right and they end up with leaks or poor quality.

Just a thought.

Jay

UPDATE : I had my windshield crack repaired last week throug Allstate. Basically there was no deductible applied and they covered the cost of the repair through Safelite Autoglass. If I wanted to replace it instead of fixing it, they would've required me to pay the $500 deductible which I was not willing to do.

Thanks for all the advice & concerns.
