I work for a Chrysler dealer but I imagine all manufacturers are similar.
When your old part comes off, it becomes the property of Infiniti. When the warranty claim is submitted, the manufacturer then decides weather or not they want the part returned. There are several reasons why they may want it back. That dealer may be high on a certain repair and they want to know if the car is being diagnosed properly and the part really needed to be replaced. They may be spotchecking to determine a dealers honesty. It's possible there is a quality issue on that part and they need to get it to engineering. If a manufacturer contracts a vendor to supply a part at a set price and a large number of that part fails, they can go back to the vendor to improve that part or they may get some of their money back.
My suggestion would be to say "If they don't want my old part returned, may I have it back, please"
