Groan/crunching noise after rear pad replacement

Hey guys,

I replace my rear pads on my G35x 2007 about 10 days ago. It was fine at first, but I noticed a groan/crunching type of noise coming from the rear pads possibly the front pads as well. This is noticeable when I am at slow speeds (below 10). Is it because the pads are new? or is there something that is not right? The rotors were not replaced or resurfaced. What do u guys think? Thanks.

Did you get in there and take a look?

Also, did you properly seat the pads after replacement?

im in the same boat man. I had my rotors resurfaced about a month ago and its been getting steadily worse with the groaning, crunching, grinding noise. I took it back to the dealer and they said the front brakes were fine but that my rear brakes needed new pads and that the tires were probably at fault too since they were cupped and in bad shape. So a new set of 4 tires later, new rear pads, the sound is worse than ever. And to top it all off, now that its more pronounced, i notice its only from the front right wheel. So I am having to go back to the dealer and basically demand they give me new rotors. Thats the only other thing i can possibly think of (granted i am not a car guy). It absolutely pisses me off that i have only had this car for 4 months tops, bought it with 16k miles and i have had this many problems with brakes/grinding/crunching....

Has anyone else had this issue and what was done to resolve it?

just a couple things to look at for you guys (and i apologize if you've already done it and im just rehashing stuff)...

- is the dust shield behind the wheel touching the rotor?
- is the sound only during breaking or at all slow speeds? (i'm assuming only during braking but i want to be sure).

if you replace the pads you should replace the rotors (although i'm not convinced the opposite is true yet)

if they are semi-metallic pads then take the pad off and look to see if there is a big chunk of metal sticking out of the compound (it's happened to me!!)

make sure there is brake grease on the pad backings, and ensure all sliding points are lubricated properly.

make sure the lugs are properly tightened because the brakes will pull the wheel in and make a crunching noise, i've seen it happen too. typically you shouldn't be having caliper problems but you could always bleed and refill the system if you're in doubt.

i hope it works out for you guys!

After replacing my front/rear pads and rotors in and bedding them in, I'd had a grinding sound (like the pads where hitting the rotor). After a week the sound went away. Maybe you need to bed in your brakes, a few 30-5 mph and 60-5mph rough stops.

i actually have tried this. I only get the noise when i am half engaging the brakes or coming to a slower stop. I have tried mashing them a few times to get them to "click into place" or something like someone else suggested. I am hoping that tomorrow at the dealer they just tell me the resurfacing didnt work and replace the front rotors

Hey guys,

Its been a couple of more days and a couple hundred miles on the highway, and the grinding/crunching noise has subsided. I don't notice the sound anymore. I believe it was due to the pads being new and I had not broke them in.
FYI, I took the pad replacement to a independent mechanic shop cause I could not take the (i believe 14 mm) bolt off since I didn't have enough space to apply enough torque to the wrench due lack/compact space. Even the mechanic needed to use two wrenches below the hydro-lift to take the nut off. Anyhow, I saw him replace the pads and the lub up the pads before replacing.

Anyway thanks guys for your replies. Until next time. BTW, always pump your brakes after replacing your pads in order for the pistons and pads to proper align, in order to avoid loss of breaking.

i just got my car back from the dealer and they ended up replacing the front rotors. They said that they would do it on a time basis as a courtesy. They were orginally resurfaced due to the brake judder. I kinda gave the guy a funny look and said well i would have demanded that they be replaced by infiniti due to that anyway and find it hard to believe they would normally not cover that. Anyway, groan/crunch is gone.

New pads should never "grind", even before the proper pad seating process is completed.
I just did my brakes last weekend (pad replacement) and after getting it all back together, I heard a noise coming from the front left while pulling up the driveway. I immediately backed the car back into the garage and tore it back down. There was a shim between the caliper and pad that had a tab bent out, which was touching the rotor. Once I corrected that, everything was silent... no grinding.

Never, EVER, drive a car that is making suspicious noises coming from your brakes. They are the only thing keeping you from killing yourself and/or someone else around you.

Just because the noise is subsiding, that doesn't mean it just corrected itself. It just means that what ever was touching has now worn down. That's not necessarily a good thing.
Get in there and check it, or pay someone who knows what they are doing to do it for you.
