Evap Core Location Smelly A/C Help

Hello Everyone,

I have the infamous Smelly A/C problem on my 2008 G35XS Sedan. Meaning when i shut off my A/C and keep the fan running it smells like mold/smelly feet ect. I know that this is due to the bacteria in the A/C system, and i have tried doing the 10 min of max heat to no avail. I am going to change my in cabin filter this weekend and see if that helps.

I just wanted to know if anyone has sprayed the available AC Cleaner products into their vents and/or Evap Cooler Core.

I have heard this works on other cars.

I am assuming that the core is somewhere near the Miro Cabin Filter, but i am not sure. I would think it would be a good idea to spray this stuff into the A/C Vents along with the area near the Evaporative Core.

Let me know if anyone has done this to their car.

Here is the product I am talking about using.

I just need to know where to spray it. Once i get into the cabin filter area.

Thanks in advance

It appears some people have had this problem before.

Maybe its not as Infamous as I am making it out to be.

But my GF has the same issue on her 2006 G35x.

So lets just say to me its infamous.

Well the first place I saw it talked about was in the DIY for the Cabin Filter Change thread.

definitely change the cabin filter.

Over here, you can go to car wash and detailing shops and have them clean out your A/C system of dust, bacteria, etc. You might wanna try doing that too.
You can also try to shut the A/C off a minute or two before you reach your destination. I've been told this prevents the build up of bacteria/mold. Not much of a long term solution but it helps until you get the issue fixed I guess.

I recently changed the cabin filter and it doesn't make much of a difference.

I don't notice the problem if I just leave the A/C on all day. I do often "air it out" by turning off the A/C and setting the temp to 60 -- but that's the only time I notice the smell. Will it just get worse if I leave the A/C on all the time?

Ok so this is a very easy fix.

$6 for the A/C Cleaner that is available at most auto parts stores.

1) So basically you have the A/C on with the fan full blast and spray the mixture into the A/C inlets. For us these intake inlest are located under the hood where the Windshild wipers sit. If you turn on the A/C you can hear and feel the air being sucked into the plastic vents. I sprayed a bit of solution in each of the 4 vents.

2) You then leave the A/C on for 5 min to let it circulate in the A/C system. I just drove to dinner or drove into work. You do need to keep your windows open here bc the lemon sent is nice but powerful.

3) I also sprayed the stuff into the recirc vent which is near the front passengers left foot. If you look down there u can see a little grate on the side of the transmission/dash tunnel.

4) I also ended up spraying the hood vents later on with my A/C off and the fan on full blast. This helped get rid of the smell when i turn my A/C off.

If I get time i will post up some pics of the vent slats, but I think my description pretty much tells it all.

I guess you can also spray the stuff directly into the vents on the dash, but I did not see the purpose as the air would just push the spray out instead of thru the system.

Yep that is exactly what was happening to me. I sometimes turn the A/C off as the summer nights can be nice here these days, and I was instantly getting the bad smell.

Not any more.
