Cost Effective Way To Replace Door Handles & Steering Wheel - Black Finish is Chippin

The black finish on the soft silicone material of the door handles and steering wheel are chipping and scratching right off. It's starting to look extremely bad.

Infiniti Canada indicates they won't replace under warranty - which is total B.S given that virtually everyone i know that owns this vehicle has had this issue.

Is it possible to get the parts somewhere at a reasonable price and how much is involved in replacing them? I don't normally do DIY projects but this one seems like it would be worth while.

Any feedback would be great.

Thanks

I would say go to a local upholstery shop and have them replace the piece?

Follow up question would be, is it possible to get a replacement part that has the new harder plastic finish of the '09 and up models? or are we limited to replacing it with the same part that came with our '07 models?

Thanks

from what most have said, the 08 are direct replacement and are of hard plastic that does not chip as easily.

I think the cheapest way is to have the pieces sanded and painted. My dealer also told me I'm out of luck too

The door handles pop in and out easily, and are about $30-40 each, you can probably do it yourself. I think for the steering wheel, the whole things needs to be replaced. I got new handles in August on my 07 and no peeling or scratching yet. New steering wheel in early Nov. right before warrant went out and no problems there yet either.

Any way of finding out what the part # is? I want to ensure I get the '08 part then to avoid this being a future problem.

You can take them off and sanded it down w/ 200 grit sandpaper, and then turn it into a paint shop to get them painted. that's what i did to all 4 door pulls. the steering wheel i have another plan for that. Still working on how to do that mod

I bought a leased G35 2007 Black/Black car and shop dealer has painted/buffed the steering wheel control area so I was looking at closely one I noticed all these inside scratches and they painted. I showed to Infiniti dealer and they replaced whole steering but not the logo piece. Also checked before for the estimation the steering wheel costs around $1000(not labor included).

I need to also replace handles(hard inside) they are not as smooth as newer models but the dealer whom I have done the steering wheel job they said, they wont cover under warranty. I am going to see another dealer this week and see if they cover them.

I think everyone has been able to get this taken care of... I am surprised that Infiniti Canada will not cover this thing ... But i guess they have different warranty policy than the US.

Just a suggestion to the OP, if there is another dealer reasonably close by you may want to take a drive and see if they can help you. I'll even send you a copy of the paperwork from when my door handle parts and steering wheel was replaced due to this issue- heck I just got it done a few months ago and my car is a 2007 with 40,000 some miles. The replacement parts are a different material and dont scratch as easy.

Or you can always do your own thing to get a custom look. Best of luck.

Go here and lookup Switch Bezel - about $30.00ea.
The steering wheel is way too expensive.

That sucks. Sorry to hear about them not replacing it. I too had this issue when I bought my 08 sedan. The door pull was scratched to sh*t and a few chips on the steering wheel (they were like that when I bought the car). I took it in and had it all replaced under warranty. Gave me a brand new better material door pull, brand new steering wheel and even replaced my instrument panel lid because there was a gap between the lid and the buttons (and I didn't even notice it).

My '07 is having this same issue, and I have searched high & low trying to find a part number for the door handle inserts - and EVERY post I have seen where someone asks for a PN they just get a reply with this link telling them to look up the number. Well that link no longer works, and nobody ever posted the part numbers once they found them. Anyone have the PN's so I can try to find them online? If not then I guess I'll just call the dealership, but they are closed today so I thought I'd check here first.
