They might have seen, and be referring to, another DIY from a while back. 07G35Socal did cut down the post length in order to give the shift lever a much lower look and it worked well.
Here is the DIY. Go to post 11 only if you want to shorten the shift lever.

Like you said though, we DO NOT have to cut the post length to install the M45 ****.
