'08 G35 sedan A/T to '11 BMW 335is 6MT
I sold my G and bought a 335is a little while ago and wanted to just say bye to this great community. In case anyone's looking for a FI exhaust, or Eibach springs + rear camber kit or M45 19" rims and +20 spacers, check out my F/S posts in the V36 classifieds section. Prices I think are very reasonable.
Anyway, had a lot of fun with my G35, but I really wanted to get back into a 6MT so I thought I'd try out a BMW. Funny thing is, I had avoided getting a 6MT for the G because I was worried about spraining my ankle and not being able to drive as I used to always sprain my ankle at least once or twice a year. Well, after 5 yrs of no injuries, I get the 335is 6MT, then I sprain my fvcking ankle this weekend!
Here's my 08 G35... I went from this:

to this:

While the BMW is quicker, I miss the way the VQ35HR motor pulls hard to redline. The small turbos on the BMW alleviate much of the turbo lag, but they run out of breath at about 5.5K rpm. Another thing... don't know why people complain about how the VQ35HR motors are not smooth. Frankly, I was looking forward to sewing machine smooth BMW inline-6 power, but the motor in my car isn't much smoother than the VQ in my G.
Still, can't complain about 320 hp and 370 ft/lb of torque stock. Plus, it's just an $800 ECU upgrade away from 340 wheel HP and 400 ft/lb of torque.

congrats!
"the 335is gets 320 hp and 332 lb-ft torque from the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine, and an overboost function allows for seven-second blasts of 370 lb-ft of torque"
Sounds like 7 seconds of heaven! lol

BMW has better steering - partly because it has a very nice beefy steering wheel and also because it has more road feel. The gap btw my car w/ Eibach springs, 19" rims/tires and my BMW wasn't really all that great. But, when I put the stock springs and tires back on, the stock G was definitely mushier.
Nice car.. Good luck...
I wonder how the reliability of the single turbo will be...
Your G was sweet....

^ 335is still has the old N54 motor with twin turbos. Same motor used in the new BMW 1M. Non "is" 335s have the N55 single turbo motor.
Turbos are very reliable. It's the high pressure fuel pumps that go out with startling regularity on these cars. So much so that BMW increased the standard warranty on the fuel pumps to 100K miles.

I thought that every car was going to the N55 single set up.
So your saying that the sport versions have the old motor?? Interesting..
Nice upgrade, I miss mine a LOT. You get the sport package I hope
And the steering feel in the 3 is far ahead of the G. More seat time will show that to you. The overall road feeling and turn in response was no comparison between the 2.

Yup, and i read in one of the review/articles that the reason behind that was simply because the engineers are more comfortable tuning the old motor with twin turbo for more gains.
Only the 335is models have the twin turbo N54 motors. But, they're upgraded with addt'l cooling and ECU tuning to produce more power than the old N54s with 300hp/300lb/ft torque.
Single turbo N55 motors are more fuel efficient and just as quick as the non-is N54 cars. However, they are not nearly as tunable for more power and choke even harder at high rpms when the boost is turned up.
Of course, upgrading a single turbo is much cheaper and I would assume there will eventually be upgraded N55 turbos in the aftermarket.
