Michelin Pilot Super Sports

Hey Guys, recently got a nice set of 18" wheels for my Infinit G and was looking at the Michelin Pilot Super Sports. However though, I noticed that my size PSS are 168 a tire which is incredibly cheap for PSS/PS2s. My tire size is 225/50R18. Why are they so cheap for this size when all other sizes are much more expensive?

I saw that too; it is a little unnerving. All the reviews suggest that they are awesome though, so maybe it's just a random stroke of good luck(for a change) for our sorry lot that need the oddball sized 225/50-18's.

Sure is nice to have some serious competition for the RE050A's.

Michelins are awesome tires... they're probably getting rid of old stock on the tires

ehhh...I don't think so. These are a brand new model line for them; there shouldn't be any old stock.

OK awesome to hear one of you has great luck with these. And yeah, they are brand new. So new the specialty tire place I always go to (that have hundreds and hundreds of ALL tires in stock) had to order them directly from Michelin in Maryland and get them shipped here. I'm so pumped to see how they are! I'll reply back to this post when I have driven on them for a week or so and report back.

I've never purchased performance summer tires. The southeast doesn't get much snow but we do get pretty cold temperatures and sometimes ice. Does the rubber on summer tires basically "freeze" and become unusuable in the winter? I do have awd and maybe I can get by with summer tires all year round. This tire set seems like a great deal right now. I need some advice so I can make a decision asap!

Summer tires basically become hard, and therefore slippery, at around 40* F. You can still drive on them, but just don't expect anything near the stickiness they exhibit when warmer. I have (carefully) driven on them down into the teens without too much drama, but they can definitely make for some unexpected puckering.

I just purchased a set of 4 Michelin Pilot Super Sports for the staggered setup:

225/50R18 - $159.99 per tire
245/45R18 - $265.99 per tire

From Costco...with tax and installation the total was $911 - this included a $70 rebate that they take off at the register. No need to mail in any forms, etc.

I was originally waiting for the Bridgetone RE760's to come off of backorder as they are a little cheaper, but I can't wait anylonger...my rears are completely bald (that sounds dirtier than it actually is).

That sounds like a great price for this grade of tire; even cheaper than the RE050's which I expect will turn out to be inferior to these. It's great to finally have some serious competition in our sizing for a change that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Please keep us posted on how these perform for you.

according to motortrend these tires are only the "outer 1/5 of the tire is a summer compound, while the remaining 4/5 is a winter/wet compound."

So is it safe to say I can use these all year round in the southeast? Not worried about snow or black ice, just maybe below freezing temps.

My guess is you could probably "get by" with them, but my concern would be whether or not that 1/5 summer compound would experience accelerated (hence disproportionate) wear when it hardened up in colder weather. Maybe it's not a factor, but we're still talking about a $900 set of tires, so it would be a shame to burn off the sticky stuff over the winter and then regret it come the next summer.

PS. Time may tell as more people install these tires. They're still relatively new.
