is this normal?

I was driving this morning in the rain, the car wasn't slipping but I noticed a strange behavior with the rpm. While doing 30mph on the highway and doing 1500rpms, whenever I let my foot off the gas to coast I noticed that the rpm immediately dropped about 500 and it felt like engine braking was occurring. Only did this at low speed. Is this normal?

Water on the highway can sometimes act as a braking agent if it's deep enough.
How much tread is left on the tires?

Tread wise my tires are new...

Gear wise I am not sure.. which ever one at 30mph. I was in D and its a 5at.

I just thought it was strange that when I let foot off the gas the rpm would drop like that on purpose instead of going down slowly ....

It would kinda make sense if you were in 4th or 5th. That initial 1500 is really low rpms for 30mph unless it hadn't down shifted yet while coming down from a higher speed.

^^you can pay attention and feel for the car to upshift/downshift... the rpm will drop when you upshift.
