I polished the chrome rim straight through to aluminum. wtf.

I guess that these black spots on my chrome rims are here to stay? Unless I actually want to take the time to polish off 100% of what I assume is chrome paint on aluminum wheels.

Oh well. One of these days I'll have to get aftermarket rims to get clean wheels again? I bought used. It's just a couple years of brake dust and hard water stains. I used a bunch of solvents to no avail.

I was kind of surprised to find out that it was just chrome paint, tho. Am I right in assuming that?

Thanks.

Later.

if you are talking about oem chrome finish wheels then yeah its just chrome paint because real chrome is heavy, like really heavy so infiniti wouldn't put like 35lbs wheels on a sports sedan/coupe.

Do you think that paint thinner would remove all of the chrome paint?

There's not too much difference between polished aluminum and chrome to me. And at least that way I could get rid of the black spots.

Does anybody know? Thanks.

Powder coat the wheel or have them professionally painted.

Cool!

How? Haha. I mean, I don't even have the means to remove tire from wheel. Is this something that can be done at any body shop?

Oh look, it's another Sprockethead thread.

If you're thinking of just removing the paint and going with plain polished aluminum you are going to be disappointed. Aluminum dulls very quickly when exposed to the elements, so you would need some serious clear coating applied to them to keep them from oxidizing.

Ok, good point, thanks. After the holiday weekend I'll call some folks to get price quoted on either painting or powdercoating wheels. I've actually found a bunch of posts online from diyers who painted their wheels without taking the tires off! Don't know if I'm comfortable going that route. Having said that, if anybody has ever had their wheels painted or powdercoated and know what the ballpark price is, I'd love to hear it.

I had mine professionally painted. I only paid for the paint so it was like $50.00, but usually they will charge you like 50 per wheel for paint and ~100 for pc. Well, at least in Hawaii that's the average price.

Hmmm, at 450 I should either look at upgrading wheels or just living w the stains and take a vacation. Decisions.

Tial makes a paint stripper that will remove it. I used the stuff called aircraft stripper it wrinkles the paint up and you scrape it off.
