My first steering pump started making a whining sound when the car had only 12k on it, and was replaced under warranty. Now 2 years later, my car has 32k on it and the steering pump took a dump again. Out of warranty this time, and its not cheap. WTF? Is there a known problem with these things?

 

You are the first I've read of on the forum.

 

mine went out at 10x,xxx miles. Replace asap, I ened up being the steering column from driving for 2 months without power steering.

There could be a problem elsewhere thats making your steering pump go out. Go for a diagnostic first before you just fix it again.

 

I've been on here 4 years and never seen a thread about a steering pump issue on a second gen G sedan. I did a quick search and nada one.
Unfortunately, you're just having bad luck. What does a new one cost with labour etc?
