I was reading in the owners manual of my 2008 G35x that it's not good to have the headlights turn on and off a lot. This got me wondering about the auto headlight sensitivity and if it's worth leaving it on auto.

My concern is the car sits in a garage and even on a bright day the lights turn on while the car is backing out of the garage. Do most folks leave their setting on auto or handle it the old fashioned way?

If you leave it on auto, does adjusting the sensitivity make that much of a difference?

I am also wondering how other drivers get around that. I like leaving it on auto and i put the sensitivity to the highest level and every time im driving under bridges, even for just a second or two, they will come on as soon as i enter and then turn off after i leave the underpass. I guess if you lower the setting all the way down, it will only turn them on when it senses it really is dark out. As for the garage , you might need to turn it off every time.

I leave my setting of sensitivity on the lowest level and leave it on auto.

Why is it bad to have them turn on and off?

I have it on the highest sensitivity on auto mode. educate me on this.

I park in my home garage, had mine on Auto, default sensitivity, drove it everyday, and after 4 years never had any headlight problems.

.... im pretty sure they mean it can be bad IF they turn on and then turn off and then quickly turn back on...

I'll let someone who's more educated in xenon bulbs discuss the pros/cons of constantly turning on and off the lights. I heard the explaination once, and honestly, I can't remember the details for the life of me.

That being said, I'm a manual guy. I like turning the lights on and off myself, and I never use Auto.

I thought that its not the sensitivity that's being adjusted, rather the delay timing. So lower settings will allow some lag before turning on.

Why not just lower the setting if they turn on too much going under bridges?

You can adjust the on/off too light sensitivity and a delay off timer. They are two different things.

If on and off quickly is bad, why did they set the headlights to turn on and off quickly when the alarm sounds?

since this is regarding the headlights... what I've noticed is the headlights are a little corroded (correct term?)... I take care of them pretty well too with mcguires scratch x pretty frequently...

Ok, this is news to me, lol...how do you adjust the auto headlight sensitivity?

look in Settings-Comfort&Convenience.
It may require premium pkg. Look in the OM 4-17 and 4-18.
