Oh you are welcome there! I am over there and I have an 05. At first I didn't even have a g lol. Wannabe just recruited me to head over there.

I'm sure I will miss having my X in the upcoming 4 months but after that...not so much.
I had snows on my X and now on my S. Always good to be as safe as possible.

Winter tires are a small price to pay for being able to stop short of the lunk-heads who constantly cut you off in the winter because they forget it's slippery and that they can't pull out into traffic and take off quickly.

 

Just gotta dig up some of my new car pics from march of 07,,( not that my car looks bad now) and get to meet some fellow Minnesotan's, and see some nice cars this next spring, and summer!!!

 

Yea man, technically you can post on the 37 forums anyways since the cars are pretty much the same. A lot of us 07-08 guys are on the forums since most body parts, intakes, etc, fit.

But yea man. I see you on here a LOT and that is cool. We have a big gathering of cars in MN and always looking for more! Heres our spring opener last year.

 

I'm on Eibachs and as long as the snow is less than 3.5" on the road, I'm just fine. With plows running all the time, that's never a problem.
The only thing to remember is after the storm has come and gone and the crunchy blocks of crap start to appear on the road, it's better to go around it than over it.
Frozen, icy snow is just like cement and it sounds awful when it hits the belly of the car.

Otherwise, my car's a tank in the snow. (I'm on Blizzaks during the winter)

 

Are you guys running the stock 17" wheels in the snow, or has anyone used the optional 18's? I'm debating if I should keep my 17's with snow tires, or get a good set of All Seasons for my Sport 18's.

I was in 4-5 inches of snow this past weekend in northwestern Iowa and it didn't even phase the X! I tested out the SNOW mode and certainly noticed a difference, although I won't ever use it. I came from an SRT8 (425HP, RWD) and made it through last winter with summer tires on it... SO, anything is better then that. I have had many previous vehicles, however and the X is way better than standard FWD cars. I do miss swinging the back end around all the time...however, as others have said, turn VDC off, hit the parking lot, hold it in 1st, and you will do doughnuts all day long!

 

Did you really make it through a winter on summer tires?

I am on Continental DWS's and contemplating on whether I want to see if I can make it through the winter with RWD and a 6MT on all seasons.

Sure did. The only time I got stuck was in a parking lot after they plowed behind the car... a simple push from a friend and I got right out. I had Goodyear F1 supercar tires on it which aren't even rated below 32 degrees. I will never say a good set of tires don't matter, however the driver has more control over the car then rubber does. You will make it through the winter just fine with all season tires. Drive cautiously, moderate the throttle, and watch your braking - you'll be fine. Those DWS's are great tires - one of the best all season tires in the snow.

 

^This has to be some of the worst advice I have ever heard/read.

Driver has no control if you need to make an emergency stop to avoid hitting a car that pulled out in front of you unexpectedly and the tires your on just slip down the roadway.

YOU can get by with AWD, but the second you put not optimal tires on a RWD, and your screwed. RWDs don't work without snow tires,

 

+1 on the DWS's. They were great even on my wife's FWD CX-7, drove in plenty of snow last year with no problems.

 

I run dedicated 17's with snows in the winter, 19's with Summers in the warmer weather.

Once you go this route, you'll find that All-Seasons pretty much suck in comparison.
They're not that great in the snow and ice and do not compare to an ultra-high performance summer tire during the warmer times of year.

I also held onto my OEM 17's, in case they ever come in handy.

 

What I am getting at is that regardless of your tire choice, you HAVE to remain diligent and drive with caution. Far too many AWD/4WD vehicles believe they can drive in snow/ice conditions similar to the way they drive in dry environments and end up in accidents. Rubber on ICE has little to NO traction, therefore it is up to the driver to control the vehicle. Simply because you throw snow tires on a vehicle does not equate to safe travel if you don't adjust your driving technique. My advice was NOT to drive on summer tires, it was simply sharing my experience with a less then perfect (no snow tires) setup. My X with all season tires drove with ease through 5 inches of snow and I agree, snow tires would improve traction even further but some of us cannot justify the cost. I should have elaborated my point further - you apparently didn't understand it.

As I said, you should be fine with DWS tires. A friend has DWS tires on his M35x and it has made it through the toughest midwest winters with EASE. Give them a shot in a few snow storms and if you feel unsafe then go ahead and install dedicated snow tires.
