Please help!...streamlining info on fluids...

Hey all,

So I searched, and looked at approximately 5-10 threads regarding fluid changes on the 2007-08 G's. I have an 08x and would like to get the transmission, differentials, and transfer case fluid flushed/replaced. Problem is, there seems to be A LOT of discrepancy as to what fluids to use and (more so) HOW MUCH fluid is needed for each part. Please clarify on the following points.

1) Automatic transmission-- Matic S, 16 quarts for complete flush, 5 for just drain??
2) Transfer Case- Matic D, 2 quarts?
3) Differentials- 75w90 synthetic, how many quarts are needed? (i'm assuming 1 or 2?)

I have 41K on my car and have no history of maintenance (purchased at 38K), so I'd like to do these things for peace of mind, if not completely unnecessary. Please let me know how much of each I'll need, and if I'm listing the most appropriate oil for each...and any other helpful info! It's truly appreciated!

I just changed all fluids on my '08 x at four years and 37,500 miles this month after probably starting half those threads trying to figure it out. Perhaps a bit early but I plan on keeping it "forever" so I want it maintained. Here's what I had done:

1. Transmission fluid flush - yes, 16-quarts Matic S. You probably could do as little as 12 quarts and get a full replacement but my mechanic recommended 16 quarts to make sure you have 100% replacement

2. Transfer case - yes, 2 quarts Matic D. It won't take the entire second quart. Apparently you could use S but as the manual calls for D I did not want to mess with it

3. Differentials - you need 3-quarts as one of the differentials takes 1 quart and the other takes 1.3 quarts, I forgot which takes more. I used Mobil 1 75W 90 but any synthetic I'm sure is fine, as obviously is the Nissan gear oil although I don't believe it's synthetic.

4. Coolant - I also did a drain and refill of the coolant with 2-gallons of distilled water to flush followed by 2-gallons of Nissan Long Life 50-50 Blue Coolant. Probably overkill but as I was getting everything else done, I figured for $40 in coolant, what the hell. Prestone probably is the fine for half the price.

5. Engine oil - 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 5W30 EP and premium filter. Jug says good for 15k, I run it 7,500 and some here will tell you as little as 2,500 miles. I've been doing 7,500 miles and I would be shocked if this did not provide complete protection.

Good luck with your car. I think you made a great choice, but I'm biased.
