Questions for DIY 30k Service

I'm about to do my 30k service. I plan to put Hawk brake pads on the front, change the transmission fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, front differential and rear differential fluid.


Is there a difference between transfer case fluid and rear differential fluid?
How much do I need of differential fluid and transmission fluid?


Hopefully this thread will not only help myself, but also help anyone else considering performing their 30k, 60k etc. service.

I thought the coolant in our cars was Nissan long life coolant which is good for way, way longer than 30k miles.

No. If you read the Infiniti Service Manual, the Premium Maintenance Schedule recommends a coolant change at 30,000 miles.

Don't forget to flush the brake fluid.
There is most definitely a difference between transfer case fluid and diff oil. Don't mix them up.
I think I used just about a quart for the rear diff. As for the front diff and Xfer case, IDK, I don't have an X.

^ like VQ said, the diff uses gear oil while the transfer cases uses ATF. On my FX i use NIssan ATF Matic-D for the transfer case as listed in the manual. Check your manual first though before buying! For the rear diff go to the DIY section and read sound_mike's diy for how much you need i know its less than 2qts

As for the coolant you can judge it by the color. i changed mine around 50k and it was still in pretty decent shape, when you do it though make sure you follow the DIY posted on these forums to properly bleed all the air out of the system using the given air release valves.

If you have an X there is front diff, rear diff and transfer case, they are not the same. Transfer case takes 1.6 qts Matic D ATF, Front Diff takes 1 qt gear old and Rear Diff takes 1.6 qt gear oil. I used Mobil 1 Gear Oil 75w90. Transmission fluid amount depends on if you are flushing or drain/refill. A full flush uses as much as 16-qts to ensure full replacement, a drain/refill five. Nissan actually put out a service bulletin advising against a flush but I did it before I knew with 16 qts Matic S and there was no problem - I think it depends on the machine and my mechanic is a Master Nissan guy so I hope he has the right type. The only other thing is at 37,500 miles my rear pads were about done and I had them replaced and the rotors machined as they were not rusted. The front pads had plenty of meat left on them, so measure before you replace. You actually might need neither, rear instead or both.

^ if i remember correctly the bulletin advising not to do the flush was intended for only when mechs use other aftermarket flush machines not approved by nissan/infiniti which would basically mean getting the flush done only at either dealership and no where else to avoid any warranty issues.
