Steam from under hood?

Hey everyone.

This is my first rain session since I bought my 2007 G35.

Just curious about something. So it is raining pretty moderately here, and whenever I come to a stoplight for more than 10 seconds, or even after I left my car in the parking lot, I noticed (what I assume is) steam coming out from the front grille right above the Infiniti symbol.

Now like I said, I am new to this car. I know it puts out a lot of heat, but is that normal?

I assume it is steam because it has never done it before, but does that mean I have a bad seal or something or is that just a by-product of the rain and this cars setup?

Basically, does anyone else's G do this?

_Michael

I like to say it might be coming from your brakes.

This has been posted countless times. I don't know why people don't bother searching. The steam is absolutely normal.

Glad to know it is normal.

My 2003 Honda Accord had a power steering leak and it was doing the same thing but was a little darker in color.

Freaked me out this morning.

I assume this is a simple design flaw? Any workaround to mitigate it or is it just kinda "is what it is?"

Lol...the steam is obviously from the rain splashing onto the hot radiator...there isn't a design flaw whatsoever. It's not like your car will burst into flames when it is raining outside...

Water + hot surface = steam....simple as that.

If you have steam coming out when it ISN'T raining, then you have a problem. Your service engine light or heat gauge will be abnormal anyways...if there isn't anything weird going on in terms of drivability, then no need to panic.

Steam doesn't bother me as much as the power steering leak did. I guess maybe my OCD takes over sometimes.

I am glad my G is solid in all other areas. Still had I paid 50K+ and drove this out the dealership on a rainy day and saw steam coming out, my engine cover emblem falling off, and my steering wheel trim peeling, that would be a quick 180 back to the dealership.

You paid $50k for an Infiniti G? Even in Canada, that sounds overpriced.

He didn't actually say he paid it, but he is very mistaken about the pricing on an '07 G35. IIRC, even with every conceivable option, PLUS tax, license, and all fees, there was NO WAY you'd get near $50K. Heck, when I ordered my 6MT from the factory with Premium (and a few other minor options), it was a grand total of 36K OUT THE DOOR! I laugh when I see people buying into the idea of it being an expensive luxury sedan; I think it's more wishful thinking (desired status) than anything.

According to this Canadian site for the 2007 G35

http://www.auto123.com/en/infiniti/g...view=equipment

A G35 Sport Automatic RWD base would run $46,790 MSRP up here in the Great North!

Heck the G37 Sport 6MT still runs about that MSRP up here!

Regardless, you tack on some tax up here (its 12% in BC), easily you could get $50K!

Not saying it should be like that but that's just how it is up the north, getting ripped a new one!

DAAAAAMN! Well I guess I stand corrected on that.

That's terrible for you guys. But that should mean everything (car wise anyway) is over priced, right? So in a sense, is it proportionate; would a Nissan Altima cost a premium as well?

Pretty much, cars seem to usually carry a 5-10% premium up here on average. However it just gets blown out of proportion once you get to the top end of things like for example the Lexus LS460, starting MSRP is $72K in the states while it's roughly $83K up here!

Now nudging back onto topic, it's just the temperature difference. Could sort of relate it to breathing outside in the cold, you see your own breath.

Yeah I guess the price is not quite as high as I thought. A 2013 g is going for around $40k or so, I figured this G would have too since it was the first year of the 2nd gen body style.

Maybe that's why my VIN check listed it as "near-luxury."

I am not too concerned about the steam, I just find it odd. While it has no actual impact on the car (hopefully) I still find it odd that I have not seen any other car built in 2000 or newer have a problem with steam coming out of the grill just because its raining.

Maybe that's just me.

The problem is, this is all relative...like a car on average in Canada is probably more expensive than a car on average in USA, so our $40k vehicle is the same as a $50k vehicle in Canada. The standard of living in Canada may be higher.

Therefore, us Americans can't assume that the G is worth $50k. Therefore, our point still stands. A $40k car in America or a $50k car in Canada is still considered "mid-luxury" sedan. Plus, there are plenty of cars that probably cost more in Canada with worse problems. Our G so far has only one recall so far, and that has been the intelligent Key wiping clean when next to cell phones. Other cars have recalls that have much more severe problems.

^^ Not to get technical, but there was also a recall for faulty slave cylinders on the early V36 6MT models.
