my guess would be that it might have something to do with the brake check switch that allows for the shifter to be moved once the brake is pressed. Look at the contact point of the switch behind the brake pedal and assure that the switch is working properly and that its pressed fully when the brake pedal is depressed.
btw which year and how many miles?

Something similar happened to me with my X. Make sure you didn't tap or slightly press down the foot brake (The little hand / foot brake where clutch is supposed to be.)
The first time I did this, my car wouldn't engage into drive. After engaging and releasing the foot brake, everything was normal again.
Hope this helps.

For whatever reason, your shifter interlock is engaging apparently. As kool said, the brake switch seems a very likely suspect, and although I haven't seen it, Frenchy's idea seems plausible too if it triggers the interlock function. Failing that, there is a remote possibility that the actual linkage (under the car) is at fault, but it's very rare.

First off just press the switch with your finger and check to see if it pushes in fully and then while pressing the switch see if the 'foot on brake' sign in the center red lcd goes away once you have the switch pressed (now i dont have an auto so not a 100% sure if that sign goes away once the brake is pressed so let a few AT ppl chime in and take it from there)

Basically, what happens is the ecu thinks you are trying to drive/accelerate the car while simultaneously applying the brakes, so it throws out all the error lights and then ultimately cuts the engine power output.

checked the brake fluid and it was a little low and i added some the other day so thats not the issue and my car has yet to go into limp mode and if i scan my computer will that SES code be thrown even if the lights not on? and how would i know if the brake pedal position switch is misadjusted? would it onl be those 3 consequences, i wouldnt be able to see thats its not in the right position? and i believe the battery is good i have no reason not to think its not
