Cool Totalled the G...

was pretty much my expression when I was heading to work and hydroplaned underneath the Sunpass. Apparently those patches of concrete (not asphalt) are notorious for this.

I remember hearing the slush as the back end whipped out and seeing my horizon change from the crest of the hill to looking at the guardrail and thinking, "nah I'm not even speeding." tried to correct it a little and nothing! I accepted it 1/10th second before impact. Everything goes black and I just hear tire screeches panning left to right as I'm spinning. I come to and realize the car is rolling backwards down the slope (6spd). The engine is off (safety feature I guess) so I guide it over about 3-4ft fully onto the shoulder.

I must have been out a few seconds as by the time the car stops, 3 ppl run from their vehicles to check if I'm ok and it hits me what just happened. One guy is freaking out, barely speaking English but his expression tells me he swore I'd be dead or bleeding. I still have no idea where the front bumper went or where it is now. You can see my tiny dent in the guardrail in the pic. Ended up with two bruises and a two small lacerations from the airbag/glasses and a minor broken nose.

Car is a total loss... just got her in January after looking for months, now I'm back in the same boat... :-/

She was an 07 Sport 6spd with everything, now I'm feeling a lil lost.
Wanted to buy her back from Insurance to part out and recover deductible, but $3700 is a bit steep and there's not telling how I'd recoup that.
Do I get another G, an M, an A4 or 335... a Camry, lol..!!

Sigh..........................

sorry to hear buddy. Don't buy back, you're not gonna make that much off an OEM part out with most of the goodies smashed up.

Damn, sorry to hear about this, sure the car is wrecked but how are you? Hopefully you're feeling OK after all that. The Infiniti gets great impact scores and it looks like it really crushed where it needed to but not where you'd be severely impacted. Hope that's the case, you'll find another car that will make you happy, just keep your spirits up

Wow...hydroplaning is really annoying. I'm always scared of this happening to me. I never try to stay on the most left or right lanes when it rains anymore. Good luck to you and hope you are okay!

It also looks like your tires are a bit worn, and were due for a replacement!

Thanks for the well wishes. This happened on the 26th, I'm good now. Got a baby scar in my forehead and my nose barely still sore.

The VDC was on, it doesn't seem that reactive to me though, it seems to only drops the engine power, I've fishtailed plenty with vdc on. When I hydroplaned, there was no shimmy or wiggle, just immediately rotated. I'm thinking maybe both wheels were sliding/slipping and then the right gripped and threw the balance off, only guessing. A friend with an s2000 and an 350z hydroplaned under the same these same Sunpass setups.

Somehow I'm seeing a 335 in my future, hopefully the insurance isn't too different.

Sad to see but I'm glad you're OK. When it's all said and done cars are replaceable, people aren't. Good luck with your search for a new ride, thought about a new Q50?

Glad that you are ok. I don't think the VDC could have been much to recover control, because once you hydroplaned, you have little to no tire contact to the ground, It doesn't match if the car is trying to steer or brake, its not going to happen.

If that's a trouble spot for a lot of accident, can you get a lawyer involves to sue the city to have the road situation altered so hydroplaning will not be a danger for other drivers?

Yup, FL doesn't know how to build proper roads. They do not plain them sideways to allow water runoff. It just piles up and turns to a lake, even on 95. Lived there for quite a while. Since there is no inspection, a lot of people run their tires to the belts. Not a good scene. Up here in Mass, they would have fined you for unsafe equipment on the tires and it would be an at fault accident either way.

Good luck with the claim.

Glad you weren't hurt jbeckford1! Let's be honest, what kinda shape were your tires in? I've driven several cars in driving rain on the freeways of SoCal at speed with my Michelin's and have never had the back end come around. I've had standing water jerk the steering wheel but that was the worst of it....Gary

FL is pretty bad. I had some bfg at tires on my silverado down there and highway driving on 95 at 75 my tires were spinning loose. I honestly thought my tranny was just letting go for a few mins. I was only giving it enough gas to maintain speed and the tires would slowly start to spin. I had the same truck with the same tires in New England a few months later and did not have that kind of traction loss in a snow storm. Having great tires is required and often overlooked in FL. Or the idiots could learn how to grade a road...

I agree with Gary.

First Glad you are OK!! But I zoomed in on your pic and the tires dont look like they have the best tread unfortunately. Not coming down on you at all and the photo can be WAY OFF but as a help to others and possibly educate others on here, tire tread depth and age are very important for this reason.

I've driven on so-so ties and switched to Continental DWS tires last year. The Difference in grip (in all weather conditions) is amazing. New good quality tires are worth their weight in Gold and Grip. Never skimp out on good tires.

Good luck buddy and hope you get an awesome replacement!

I feel you dude, totaled my G a few weeks back too....Guy was flying through the intersection and made a left in front of me, light was green and I had the right of way...Took me 3 months to find an 05 -06 Sedan 6MT with low mileage (70K) , 1 owner, clean car fax, for $13k. One more week and I would have it a year, Dam.
