Oil Change DIY

I'm going to change the engine oil for the first time on the G35 this weekend, Not to be confused with this is my first engine oil change ever just an FYI. Should I opt for synthetic? Also what grade should I get? Keep in mind that I live in AZ where the temps could reach 95F or higher in the next three months. I only drive the car less than 20 miles to work and home everyday if that makes any difference.

Now a days synthetic is unnecessary bcus standard oil is great quality, hence changing it every 3000 is unnecessary bcus that rule is out dated. U can simply wait until your oil change light comes on, as long as the dealer didn't set it to come on sooner than it should. All u need to do is check the color and amount of oil u have left. If it's dark brown, it's time to change, simple as that. Anyways the weight u need is 5w-30. Don't forget a good filter!

Awesome..thanks.. good advice. So how do I go about resetting that light. The only thing thats come up right now is the reminder I set myself on the dash to change the oil. Also I'm getting the filter and the washer from my buddy he works at the nissan dealership.

the washer on the oil pan drain plug. You are supposed to replace it on every oil change, though most people don't bother.

It's like a 20 cent copper washer, think it's called the crush washer. Synthetic is up to you bud, you can go with a high quality synthetic and only have to change the oil once every 10k...

Be careful who you take advice from, some members have scary posts!

Not no, but hell no! ^ That is terrible advice! If you going with synthetic use a quality filter like WIX not the factory POS and change it every 4,500 miles. You can use 5W/30 like the factory recommends or since you live in a warm climate (like me) 10W/30. You don't need to change the washer every time you do an oil change, I never have and haven't had any drips/leaks ever.

Wix filters are high quality.

Nissan actually came out with a new filter design sometime in 2013. They're no longer made in China, silicone ADBV, and have metal internals. Someone cut one open on bob is the oil guy.

Personally i'd stick to synthetic just because of longer intervals and less impurities than dino oil.

It's all about respecting all things mechanical and how they work!

As a matter of fact yes, built my first car when I was 15 and opened my brake/alignment shop when I was 23 just back from Nam. I always had respect for everything mechanical, not doing oil changes until the warning light pops up is beyond stupid! Whom ever you gathered all this information (won't call it knowledge) from weren't worth a damn as mechanics! Where did these professionals work, PepBoys or Sears?

This is a revised 2013 oil filter. Notice the quality improvement! This is sold at your dealership and is made for the Murano, QX tank, etc other large nissan engines.

... I had to see for myself!

gotta love oil threads there's always people with different opinions. But I think one thing most can agree on though, is that if you care about your car, stay away from the really cheap oil and cheap oil filters like fram. Now arguments about mobil1 vs royal purple vs amsoil I think starts to become less of a big deal because I think at that level they are all good or at least good enough for most of us. I can get case of mobil1 synthetic on sale for less than $30 so I figure it's worth it to me as opposed to conventional oil mainly because i don't have to change it as often.

Conventional oil is like trying to justify which sports car is best. Every one of them has there perks, but in the oils world they are a lot closer together in proximity. My biggest concern is if my oil has a high shear rate. If it has a high shear rate, it could lead to worn engine internals.

I put 125K miles on my last Z using Mobil 1 and WIX filters, sold it 10 years ago and it's still on the street...can't be too bad! Royal purple and Infinit just don't seem to go togather, lots of negative feed back on Driver. If you'll take the time to read oil comparison charts the top rated synthetic is AMSOIL, why I use it.
