Question about my key please help!!

First time here so this may not be the right place to post this question. However, maybe someone can help me with an answer.

Earlier today I drove my 2007 G35 sedan 30 miles away while my keys were still in my bedroom!

From what I've read on this site, once the car is started you can drive any distance without the key in the car, and the car will continue to drive and the engine will not shut off. This much I know.

However, when I got out of my car I realized my keys were still at my house. The crazy (and scary) thing is that my car started right back up?!?! Also, the car would not let me lock it. I wanted to lock it and go to work and have a friend bring me the key. I tried to lock it from the button on the inside as well the outside handle and it would make a repetitive beeping noise and not lock.

Therefore, I could not lock my car and it could still start right up even through the key was 30 miles away. Obviously that is a thief's dream come true, so in drove home and missed work.

My question, is it possible for the car to start up again even though the key is 30 miles away? My friend suggested that there must be another key in the car I don't know about...but I looked everywhere and there's no key in the car. Is this possible?!?!? Am I even making sense?!?!? Thanks guys!!

The car should not start if the key is not present. Simple as that

Thanks for the response. The key was in my room 30 miles away. And I turned the car off and on 3 different times. Also the doors would not lock. Perhaps the only explanation is there is another key hiding in the car somewhere, but I can't see on anywhere? Maybe the dealership will know

^If the car will not lock, than yes there is another transponder in it. The car will not allow you to start it unless there is a key inside somewhere.

When the key is in my hand or pocket it will lock. But today it would not lock when the key was 30 miles away but the car would still start. I've had the car a few months and I haven't seen an extra key in there. I think I've checked everywhere. Maybe there is one buried under a seat. I'll have to look again more thoroughly

there has to be a key fob in the car for it to not lock as that's the safety feature so people won't lock in their fob/car key by mistake. I bet there's another fob in the car playing tricks with you? where's your 2nd man? do you know?

I still haven't found the mystery second pair of keys hiding from me. I think I might take it to the dealership and see if there is a way they can detect it or track it down. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks for the response.

Do you have a remote starter system?

If you start your car with the keys you have now...and then get out with them in your pocket, do you get a warning light in the cluster?

The doors won't lock if there is a key inside somewhere as well.

All signs point to a 2nd key somewhere. if oyu have a remote start, it could be under the dash tied into the system somewhere as frequently the valet key is scarificed to make some remote start systems work on cars that need a key detected inside the cabin to start

Dealership with have no way to "detect" where the second key is hiding. They'll just take your money and search the car just as well as you will. Check in between the seat and center console, that area likes to "eat" things (phones, french fries, etc). Also check the bag that has the owner's manual, there might be a spare or a valet key hiding in there.

^^this. When I installed my nifty shifty shift boot and killjulez shift ball (shameless plug again) I found all kinds of stuff below the shifter. Stuff that was to big to fall in there. Kinda weird but it goes to show that those keys can be anywhere.
