I-Key works intermittenly even in port

For the past couple of weeks every morning when I try to start my 07 G35 I have to keep hitting the start button for five to ten minutes before the I-Key is sensed and the car starts. The dash display gives the message no key and when I place it in the port it displays a symbol to remove it.

It will eventually start and it does not seem to matter rather the I-Key is in the port or not. When I go to start my car later in the day it will usually start on the first try about 90% of the time. I have also noticed that the manual key will not work when the I-key is not working. The fob has over 50% battery per the dash display and I have this problem with both I-keys.

I would appreciate any help in case there is a known simple fix before I take it to the dealership.

The batteries in my 2 I-keys are 3 volt. When I brought the car out this spring they both worked intermittently. I popped the covers open and checked the battery voltage. Both read around 2.85 volts. Not really thinking this was the problem, I bought new batteries for $6 each and voila! Both I-keys now work perfect. Might be worth a try.

Yeah, I'd just start with the easiest/cheapest solution first: change the battery.

Or use your spare key?

Also, out of curiosity though, where does the dash tell you what % your ikey battery is?

Save yourself a trip to the dealer.

Your ikey battery is dead. The display in the dash is only an icon so it doesn't really show battery level. If it is on, you should change the battery.

Thanks everybody for the responses. Put a new battery in and it started this morning with no problem. Still don't understand why it worked intermittently when I put the I-key in the port as I understand it that should work with a dead battery.

Silver G2007, on the display that shows gph, miles remaining etc. I believe It only shows briefly after you start the car and only if the battery is below a certain level. Also, my manual key was not working to unlock the car. Think I may have a separate issue with the port and manual key.

I've seen the "low battery" display. I'm just not sure how you saw "over 50% per the dash display."

Either way, glad you got it figured out.

And from what I've read, the I-key port works with a low battery, just not a completely dead one.
