Powersteering replacement or fixing help

So I have a leak in the passenger side boot(I believe). Infiniti say that it can't be fixed and the whole system has to be replaced. Their price is $1800 which is astronomical, and I am sure if I HAD to replace it I can get it done for much less. Has anyone had any experience with this issue? Can I fix it? Can I live with it? I really don't want to dump another $1000+ into a repair...

keep an eye on your P/S levels.. if it's a minor leak.. you can drive like that for years...

Also.. it'll be about $800 to $1200 elsewhere to fix..

I'll have to assess the size of the leak. I am assuming its not huge. So does driving with a leak put stress on or mess anything else up? Like p/s pump, etc... Also, if it gave out suddenly what would happen?

well.. it just depends on the rate of the "leak"..
like mine.. for the past 5 years.. the reservoir went down quarter way from max to low annually. So I never worried about it. the steering is fine.
I think most cars on the road with minor leak is fine. Now if you are refilling it every week or two.. I would say get it fixed...

i think the WORST that could happen is that you lose power steering meaning your car will be a little harder to turn at low speeds, but you are not going to crash into a wall or anything.
but I feel like you'll have PLENTY of warning before that happens.. ie. low fluid, harder turning, noise, etc.. i am talking days or weeks or maybe even months worth of warning..

Yeah it wont blow you car up, it will just be a major pain in the ***. It's up to you as to whether fixing it is worth $1500, depending on how bad it gets.

Thanks. The leak must be small because so far I never had to even refill it.
